x5 3.0td auto sport starting problems HELP
starts 95% of the time starts excellent.. 5% of the time it wont start it will turn over fire for a few seconds and stop or just turn over, but not fire, however, if I crank the engine for about 10/15 seconds and keep doing this until the battery is flat and then get a jump start it starts straight away. If I jump start the car with the battery still having some charge in it, it will not start just turns over, could it be a sensor that just does not open and sending a spike thur with the jump start opens the signal ? Also put a new receiver ring on the ignition because someone mentioned that the key might not being read, but made no difference, they also mentioned that it might be the EWS Many thanks and all info gratefully received Regards Tony |

The trouble with faults like this is that they are hard to trace when they only happen once in a while.
I had a similar issue with my 3.0d - it turned out to be the fuel pressure rail sensor. Having gone faulty it was incorrectly reporting to the engine management system that the fuel pressure was low - at which point it wouldn't open the injectors and therefore not start. It will be worth getting the fault codes read.

hi guys i have had a similar problem to this and have had the codes read. They have come up as 1190 and 9F6. Does anyone know what these codes relate to? Its a 2002 3.0D sport btw

Hi All, well fiited a new fuel pressure rail sensor, but no joy, so put the X into BMW and after lots of hours at £90 per hour they said that not all the glow plugs were working, so replaced all six ! but the problem was the CAM Sensor and now runs and starts Great, however, the bill was just under £1200.
So that now means the Lotus will have to wait a bit longer before it can go back on the road for the summer ! Hope this helps Regards Tony |

cheers tony. Funny that you should mention glow plugs as i knew they needed changing, at least one of them is out. From what i can glean, code p1190 is the fuel trim on bank 1, but the 9f6 is a mystery, not a normal obd code and obviousley bmw specific. I plan to disconnect the secondary fuel pump pipes and see if its squirting diesel as it seems for all the world to me as if its lacking in fuel pressure. Ill get to the bottom of it one way or another!

I have the same problem and am resisting going to Sytner as they are rip off merchants. |

ended up being a duff injector, return valve was stuck open and pumping straight back through the return pipe back to the tank off injector 2. Easy way to check, get some lengths of washer tubing, pop the return pipes off the top of the injectors and wedge the tubing in the top of each injector. Put empty plastic bottles at the end of each pipe and crank the engine. Which ever bottle starts to fill up with diesel is your problem injector. i got a recon one for £95 plus vat, quite straight forward to fit and bobs your uncle. The stuck return valve stops the fuel rail from reaching the required pressure duw to letting fuel out quicker than it can pump it in at idle which causes the problem.
