Had the same issue with ours. Should be getting it back tommorrow. Replacement parts they installed kept breaking, so they changed out the entire assembly per BMWNA's instruction. Covered under warranty.

Could not see anything in the rails and tried some lube spray on the wedge but it still would not close.

Bit of a problem if the weather was closing in so ran it straight down to the stealer for a look. Initial reaction from a tech was - "Oh! had one in yesterday with the same thing - it will need a new roof". The service manager booked it in for a diagnostic and guess what - told it needs a new roof but they had contacted BMW UK and to my utter amanzement and his, they had agreed to 100% parts and 100% labour contribution. Said he rarely sees a 100% contribution.
Also said that it was an updated part that would be fitted.

Told me the roof was £ 1995 inc VAT and labour booked for 5 hours would have been £ 700 -

The car is exactly one year out of Warranty (2004 model) with 38,000 miles on the clock

I am to say the least very pleased !!!
I think that this must be an acknowledged issue within BMW otherwise I cannot see why they would go so far.

The procedure takes 75 seconds. It begins by having the floating roofliner in the open position and the sunroof completely closed. The centre of the sunroof switch is then pressed and held in the Lift position. Note: the switch must be kept pushed for the whole procedure. The roof then moves to the lift position, the floating roofliner closes then opens, the sunroof then closes from the lifted position, then opens and closes fully, the floating roofliner then closes and the procedure is finished. If you release the switch before the procedure is finished, you must start again.

For non panoramic sunroof, after sunroof raises to the lift position, hold button for another 20 secs and until the sunroof "jiggles" at the open position, release switch for a maximum of 5 secs, then hold down the switch in the raising position until the sunroof has returned to the closed position after a complete opening movement. Release the switch.
Good Luck

My X5 had the same problem, 54 plate and 46K...covered under Warranty but was without the car for 3 weeks. Fortunately they provided me with a loan car but again, the cost to replace was £3k mark.

Must have been a factory design fault? glad you didn't have to pay.

Hi everyone, I too have encountered this panoramic sunroof issue...the same one that Scooters is having where the left part of the rear panel is not closing. Perhaps the cold winter here in Chicago took its toll on the sunroof as I just tried to open and close it and the left side of the rear panel just would not close. I checked the railings and there's nothing there that could be preventing the thing from closing.

My '04 3.0 is no longer under warranty. It was up in Aug '08. I'm hoping (praying in fact) that I could get this fixed for free like Scooters did in the UK. Anyone in North America or better yet Chicagoland run into this situation...where they had this same panoramic sunroof issue and their x5 was out of warranty but the price to fix the issue was covered by BMW? Thanks!

And another grateful owner, thanks for the information. Just wish the dealer could have done this when they replaced the ECU rather than leaving it for me to find and sort out. Shouldn't complain really, it only cost me £1400.
