same problem, same solution. This sit should be written in the BMW X5 manual... I think I had almost all errors on this site with my X5.

panoramic sunroof closing issue

in the owner's manual it states that if there a power interuption or other similar issue while operating the pano roof, it will need to be reset.

Unfortunately the folks that do this (per the manual) is your friendly BMW service tech

BUT luckily for us we have Colin and fatboyz, follow the instructions in their posts for reset procedure

thanks very much to you both... once again xoutpost has saved a visit to the (st)dealer

(I also wonder why it is not in the owners manual ...perhaps BMW owners cannot be trusted with such a difficult procedure

Thumbs up

PANORAMIC SUNROOF RESET INSTRUCTIONS

Issue: Sunroof shade cover does not want to automatically close with one press of the switch button. It can be eventually closed with repeated presses of the button and as the shade cover will move a few inches with each press.

Fix: A re-initialization is needed. Original instructions were slightly convoluted, but here’s a simple restatement of the instructions by fatboyoz.

1. Start by having the sunroof in the fully closed position (glass in flush, fully closed position and the shade cover in fully closed position).

2. Push the center indent on the sunroof button AND hold it down for approximately 75 seconds. During this time, the roof will go through a series of cycling operations of opening the glass sunroof and the shade cover. When the shade cover finally goes back to the fully closed position (again, about 75 seconds) and nothing moves for about 5 seconds, release the button and you have a fully functioning sunroof again.

By the way, nice work--I initially thought my sunroof limiter switch was out. No need for a service visit.

Thanks, I needed this one. After replacing my Alternator The roof would not open. I put the key in position 2 and held the middle up until it went through all the motions, then closed. Now my roof is back to normal.

The procedure takes 75 seconds. It begins by having the floating roofliner in the open position and the sunroof completely closed. The centre of the sunroof switch is then pressed and held in the Lift position. Note: the switch must be kept pushed for the whole procedure. The roof then moves to the lift position, the floating roofliner closes then opens, the sunroof then closes from the lifted position, then opens and closes fully, the floating roofliner then closes and the procedure is finished. If you release the switch before the procedure is finished, you must start again.

Holy crap it worked! Thanks for this.
I just bought a 2004 4.4i and was starting to get a little nervous about all the issues I'm reading about. Seems like the X5 is great, but picky and expensive. My Pano sunroof was doing the whole closing a couple inches at a time. I tried the Reinitializing that the manual says. "Hold the center of the button for 20 seconds." It did nothing. Tried it a few times, and lastly the sunroof decided it didn't want to slide open anymore either. Thank god I searched and found this. Holding the button for all the cycles! Why on earth doesn't it tell you to do this in the manual??
-Thanks fatboyoz
