Heeeeeelp!!!!!
I purchased and mounted my tv-on-nav system with reverse camera, but I am stuck on the relay part!!! What I would like to know is: 1.) Is there a particular type of relay I have to buy? 2.) Which ones and where are the wires that I have to connect into this relay besides the ones that are on the camera and on the video module harness? 3.) How do I tap into these wires, do I have to cut them? 4.) And finally where does the relay go connected into? If anyone can help me, please do so. It will be deeply appreciated!!! I've been stuck on this for about 3 days now if not more. Thanks to all in advance. |

Did you not get my PM? I sent you a link to the installation guide!
You have to buy an independent relay from any car audio shop or automotive parts shop. Just ask them for a simple 4 pin relay...they should know. Locate the video module (under the spare tire,) the positive and negative wires going to the reverse light bulb, and connect the wires to the relay as per the link I sent you. You can hide the relay anywhere once it is connected. The relay completes the ground connection to the video module when the reverse light bulb goes (when the car is put into reverse gear) and over-rides the navigation screen with the reverse camera image. I will see if I can take some pics to help you out... |

Okay, I took some pics of my install for you. Here is what you need to do to hook up your rear view camera:
1. Buy a 4 pin relay like the one shown in pic1. Screw it securely to the body. This relay should have 4 pins labelled 85, 86, 87 and 30. 2. Using a long wire, connect pin 30 on the relay to pin 17 of the blue plug on your TV module under the spare tire. Actually there should be a brown wire already connected to pin 17 sitting idle. 3. Locate the rear lighting wiring harness on the inner side of the trunk as shown in pic2. See if you can find a yellow wire with a white stripe, and secondly a purple wire with a white stripe. My car actually has a million wires with all the electronics...your's shouldn't be as bad. 4. Branch pin85 and pin87 together and tap into the yellow/white wire in the vehicles wiring harness as shown in pic3. Sorry about the poor pics. 5. Tap into the purple/white wire in the vehicle's wiring harness and connect it to pin 86 on the relay as shown in pic4. 6. Put your car in reverse gear (with your foot on the brake!) and it should work! Last edited by King; 03-14-2006 at 10:23 AM. |

So when i power the reverse camera from the reverse light positive as shown in the relay wiring below,
(from this page, http://www.margraves.net/toys/x5/backup_cam/cam.htm) , i get the fault message "Check Back Up Light". Looks like i may need to power the reverse camera with a separate power besides the reverse light positive from the backup circuit. Bummer... Anyone run into this "Check Back Up Light" message due to change in the Back Up circuit resistance from connecting up the reverse camera power? Thanks much! |

The whole point of the relay is to use the backup light at the "trigger" in the relay. Power to the actual relay and to the backup camera should come from another source.
