I guess I just don't get the addiction to modifications
Seems to me it is like that old joke where a guy asks for directions to XYZ, and the farmer says something along the lines of "Well, if I was going there, I wouldn't start from here". If one wants a car that is very individual, why not start with something unique? I like my X5 very much, but there are lots of them (4 on my street, 4 on the same level in my small downtown parking garage). I assume that there are similar numbers where you all live as well (well, maybe not motordavid). And if the goal is to go faster, accelerate quicker, stop better, then aren't there any number of starting points that would get you there faster/better? Having multiple vehicles makes more sense to me than supercharging an X5. I do understand installing factory-engineered options that were not in the original build, and things like the IceLink. It is the custom stuff that I don't get. Of course, ESS makes a supercharger for the Z4 as well. Now that would be fun. Of course, if I wanted to spend that much I could get a nice Porsche, and follow my own logic...

I am nutz...I like the X5 and everything about it. I dont like sitting on the ground hence no Z4. The X5 offers many of the things I like. I do not want to spend the money on a 4.8is, but like the additional get up and go. I probably will not do it as I can think of other things to do with 11 or 12 grand. but...420 hp...just damn!!!

don't do it. Remember that mods never hold their value, and it could possibly lead to other proiblems in the future (engine wise) - while the 345hp of the 4.6is is nice, there are days where I wish I had opted for a better gas mileage 4.4....

I had an urge for my cars to go faster and more power for many years until I finally decided to supercharge my GMH Clubsport. It had a 5.7l LS1 chev in it that already put out 340Hp.
Well I spent the dollars to get the job done, and then found that I needed an intercooler because the air charge was getting too hot, then I had fuel mixture problems and it was running way too lean, then I was getting detonation something bad. All this for 500Hp that the first time I planted the right foot gave me so much axle tramp that it bogged down and then laid a HUGE trail of rubber. All very nice if you are a lair but not very driveable in real life. AS suggeted elsewhere here, I went and bought another vehicle to satisfy my need for speed (a race car for the track) and took off the supercharger, sold it and the car. I bought a 3.0 X5 that was more than enough for around town but a bit slow out on the open road when overtaking that road train...... hence the 4.8. Having gone through the expensive process, I can offer that once you start tampering with engines that are designed for one level, you usually find that other items (exhaust/fuel injectors/management/gearbox) all come in to question for the new power generated. Failures are expensive and tracing propblems time consuming. Pay the money for a 4.8 if you want more Hp. Cheers

all this sounds good. I think this is just a temporary stage I am going through. I just got the bug up my butt this afternoon after reading about a superhcarged X5. Reason is starting to set in now...
