How much can I expect to get on trade-in?

Hey guys, been visiting the forum for years, but never actually posted. I'm thinking about selling my '03 4.6is. Had the car for a long time and still love it, however I saw the new X6 in person at my dealer during a recent oil change and really like it. Didn't really get a chance to drive it but it looks unreal. My X5 is an Imola Red with black leather, imola red trim and navigation. Car has 59k miles, never had any accidents/bodywork and I also bought the top-level extended warranty that covers everything and is good till 110k. I looked at kbb.com and the trade-in value is listed between $25-30k but from my past experience the dealers always try to stiff you, so has anyone here traded in an '03 4.6is recently? I realize that I would probably get more selling it privately, but I'm not sure if it's worth the inconvenience once you figure in the tax savings.

Try Carmax. I hear they give more than your local $tealer.

IF the dealer even wants it (dealers around here are actually turning people with SUVs away) they will more than likely screw you. Try to sell it privately first. On a side note hpjunkie love the quote in your sig, one of my fav. movies

I have not seen a huge drop in used X5 prices, in NY State the value of the trade is not subject to sales tax so you need to get 8.5% more to break even.

Ugh, it will most likely be sitting for a while. Try AutoTrader, eBay or Carmax as others said.

Carmax Example

2003 X5 4.6 => $33K with 16,000 miles on it.
2004 545 => $30K with 23,000 miles on it

So this shows that the SUV is selling for about the same as the 545, no discount for gas sucking SUV?

Depends on how you view that, while the 545 was top of the line for the 5er in '04, the '03 4.6 was far more rare. And the 545 has considerably more miles.

I'd call it a wash. However, people would generally be less-inclined to purchase the SUV with this current market, especially if they got the 5er with a 6spd (22-24mpg).

But that is what they are attempting to sell them for. And given that there was 1 4.6 within 100 miles of my zipcode...I'd imagine they aren't looking to grab more.
