6k was for all the other stuff they found wrong with the car and fixed under warranty. But I brought the car in for a coolant leak problem.

So they found a bunch of other issues but did not originally find the coolant leak issue until I brought the car back on a flatbed and specifically said check for this issue....you are a BMW mechanic, why should I have to tell you what problem to fix!

I know that the aux cable is a 15 minute job, because I put the cable in.

They were having a problem locating why the buttons on the console were not working and the source of the inactive suspension error message.
They wanted to tear the dash apart to trace wires. (I put my foot down and refused to let them do it)I told them I was certain it was either a bad ignition switch or a module had gone bad.

Finally they called me on Saturday and said it was a bad seat module causing the problems. I said cool fix it under my warranty and give me my car.

As I read Gurltech post it seems to me (and I may be wrong) but the 6000K for repairs
was paid by the insurance company which would null and void your Do it yourself argument.

Having said that I believe that not everyone wants to rebuild engines
and transmissions or rewire their house, or put in new plumbing. Some
of this stuff requires school training and experience. No doubt some
mechanics are better than others and some dealers are better than others
but ruling dealers out completely wouldn't be very smart especially
when warranty work is needed. Instead having a good relationship with a dealer
can assist an owner to solve many vehicle issues based on good will.
But then again that's just my opinion. (Interesting that this thread was based on a post initially started in 2008)

avoid '06

My indy mechanic has urged, no pleaded with me to avoid the '06 4.4 as BMW changed the engine block in '06. He has told me that in addition to the normal valve cover issues in the 4.4's the newer block had lifter problems as well as head gasket, and rear main seal problems. I'd stick with the 04-05
