The engines are theoretically capable of revving much higher, the fuel cutoff exists at a point where the engine can tolerate the abuse for an extended period of time, if it were bad for it, why would they let you go that high?

this thread tempted me to go at it, so yesterday after work, I went for it and damn that felt good. Reminded me of when I use to go to englishtown raceway park with my WRX. I shifted at redline from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear..good stuff

E61Silver is an unknown quantity at this point
driving at red line is not necessary with the 4.4; it would seem that you would need to hold the gear in order to see red line what is the point especially at $4.50 a gallon?

Driving at redline and driving up to redline are different things. Driving up to redline is a blast in the 4.4.

i don't hold my gears at redline..I shift at redline. It's should be better once I get rid of that CDV to make shifting smoother from 1st to 2nd..

It's fine to redline once the motor and fluids are warmed up properly. BMW thrashes these cars during development and product testing, including a trip to the Nürburgring. I do it perhaps once a week for kicks and whenever needed in critical situations. Sure, it probably isn't great for the automatic gearbox, but that's bound to fail anyways so might as well enjoy the car now

Plus, its nice to hear the motor and relish the sound!
