Tire Question

Not that I have to worry about tires to soon, I have about 70% tread left, but other than tirerack, justtires.com and discounttires.com where else do you all shop, it looks like Pirelli Scorpions will run me $1042 shipped when the time comes. I do want al all season for the snow.

Don't forget the cost of mounting and balancing etc. - go to your local tire joint with the tirerack quote and ask them if they can beat or match it with mounting/balancing thrown in.

I figure mount and balance will be around $100 but I will shop around locally first to see.

I hope the Dimaris is ok in snow, I am near Philly, and not that we get massives snowstorms, I just want to get around, last year the most we had was 4 inches, which was rare, we got lucky and had very little snow.

Diamaris are def. not OK in the snow. The Diamaris is a 'summer' tire - the tire composition that gives it the extra 'stickiness' in warmer weather turns to the consistency of a hockey puck in really cold weather. This combined with the tire tread design and wide width are really dangerous in snow - somewhat like a 5,000lb sled.

I swap out my 19's with Diamaris for 17's with true winter tires every year. But I go pretty deep into Maine and Vermont a lot.

If you don't want the hassle of a second set or wheels/tires a set of all seasons would serve you a lot better than the Diamaris in the winter - especially if you don't get much snow in the Philly area.

I will def keep them on until maybe December or so, we have been having mild winters lately and it has been somewhat warm until the middle of Dec, maybe the lowest it gets is about 35, once Jan/Feb gets here it drops.

Does your X look odd with 17's since they are smaller?

If I wanted to get a 2nd set of wheels/tires in 17's or 18's what size tires should I look for? Do they have to be staggered? What is the bolt pattern?

I found these wheels 18's for $155 each and maybe match them with Goodyear Eagle Responsedge tires for $157 each on tire rack...so for $1248 plus shipping I have a winter set, is it worth it, or just spend $1195 for the Pirelli's mounted/balanced?

Granite Alloy GX1
  • • Size: 18x8
  • • Price: $155 (each)
  • Est. Availability: 08/22/08
  • • Weight: 28.0lbs.
  • • Finish: Silver Machined w/Clearcoat
  • • Bolt Pattern: 5-120

I am thinking maybe just go with he 19" Pirelli's all year long for $1200 installed, maybe able to save $50 getting the tire myself from tire rack, I would save tax.

I got a set of 19'' rep wheels from Lakeshore Wheel and Tire with Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snows already mounted for my '05 4.8is. They worked very well, and the shipping was free.

What did they cost if I may ask?
