First of all, I have the 3.o deisel. Though I honestly havent been in a 4.8is, I am sure that this has to be at least the second best X5. It rocks. I have heard rumors that when the new 07 model conmes out, along with the 5.0 is, there will be a 4.0 diesel offered.

BTW, I have discovered through various pubs that the BMW 3.0 is the best on the market. Or maybe I wanted to see that since I also have a 3.0D Audi A6 that flies

IT MUST BE SAID that the 4.8 and the 4.6 before it,are the best x5s without a doubt.People only buy the Diesel because of cost and the better fuel consumption!Then like me,with my 3.0 Diesel,you want to give it the" big brother" look by getting the 4.6/4.8 bodykit,the 20" wheels,the exhaust tips and you get a 4.6/4.8 LOOK DIESEL!!!!!!
Diesel fuel prices in Europe are almost the same as Gasoline(in the U.K. the Diesel fuel is even more expensive!).The 3.0 Diesel Auto does between 23-28 Mpg.while the the "big brothers" do below 20mpg(although on a recent thread it was said that a 4.4 Dinan modifed does over 20mpg!!!!!).Gasoline prices in the United States are far cheaper than in Europe,and going by what someone here said,the Diesel is not as refined and therefore not very suitable for high tech Diesel engines,and the difference in fuel consumption is not that much,so there arent many arguments in favour of BMW USA getting the Diesel!They already have the 3.0i,which is similar price to the 3.0D.Here in Europe the X5 3.0 engines are in direct competition because of pricing,they also have similar standing start and top speed performance.Where the Diesel excels in its V8 like torque(500Nms) and in gear acceleration,slightly better fuel consumption and engine longevity,service costs and better residual values.Personally,from a marketing point of view,it is not feasible for a 3.0 Diesel in the States(they would have to withdraw the 3.0i!).but I am sure you all have different ideas and it would be nice to exchange opinions....

Equal consumption of fuel ???? Come on, I have a collegue who's got a 3.0i and he never goes below 13-14l/100km (and he is a slow driver). I'm running 9.5l. Performance wise, the 3.0i will eat dust, just read some reviews in decent car magazines. With my stock diesel I outran a Cayenne 3.0 (the cheapest one, not S), I kid you not. He was sticking to my a** and when I changed lanes to let him pass, I floored it and the guy was slowly getting more and more behind. He will even eat more dust after I install the Ac-Schnitzer tuning module tonight
IMHO, the 3.0d is the second best bangs for money, when it comes to an X5.

Your 2005 X5 Diesel is faster than the 3.0i,unfortunately us with pre-2004 can just about hang on with them on top speed,in gear accelleration but not off -the line (0-100km/h...3.0d=10.1 secs.....3.0i=8.5....Manual cars).
Itis always nice to hear a BMW beating a Porsche!Nice one Tom!How do you find your 4.4 exhausts?No too much smoke ,I hope!Would be really nice to have your feedback on the Schnitzer module...Thanks.

I honestly cannot vouch for the 4.8 or the 4.6 and stated that earlier. But if anyone has experience with Diesels in Europe, they have to be impressed with the performance of the X5 3.0D I particularly didnt need a class on the model numbers to understand which ones are the best because the numbers would dictate it. But I believe the diesel still makes it the 2nd best vehicle due to its groundbreaking technology, not MPG or top speed. It truly is an amazing diesel and if the colonies were able to experience it, it would shed the bad rap diesels have always had in the US (I know cuz I am American).

As for the 4.8 look, all of us diesel heads get this crap everytime. I do not want mine to look like a 4.8 (Hell, they all look alike except for the badge and maybe grill on 4.8). And I still do not feel that we are trying to look like big brother since these cost us over a $100,000.00 I just want mufflers sticking out the back cuz I think it looks cool.

Luckily, powers1 and some others prevented me from going with Remus before I purchased them. I surely would not have wanted them sticking upward. While we are on the subject, how is your project going. I know you have quite a few people awaiting the results

I not trying to give you "a class on model nrs"! How can you say that all x5s look the same? You are entitled to your opinion but the facts are that a lot of us who do not have a 4.6/4.8 end up fitting the 20" wheels and the bodykit not to simply make it pass for a big V8 BUT BECAUSE THESE ARE THE BEST MODS ON A "NORMAL" X5!
I am very impressed with my Diesel BUT IT LOOKS A LOT BETTER AND DIFFERENT WITH THE 20"S AND THE BODYKIT.........

Glad to hear that you like the 4.8is exhausts!Regarding the Remus I have an X5 with those in my workshop and we are going to cut the tailpipes and weld on the oem 4.4 tips ,at the customers request!We are also going to fit today the 4.6 20" replicas and re-programme the ECU with the car on a 4x4 rolling road,and we still have a lot of work booked after this,so my car will have to wait!!My exhaust project will involved cutting the oem box and the 4.8 to study the internal pipe work and change it if I shall find it necessary!As soon as it is done I shall submit an article with photos and instructions.

Here you will see a roadtest where a heavy footed driver averaged 14 MPG and then the other road tester managed 24Mpg but driving like a wimp!!The car is the sports packaged version with the 19" wheels so it is expected to consume more than an X5 on 17s or 18s.
In your picture,I see 33.2 Mpg and 24.1 Mpg with an average speed showing
of 45.7 km/h(28.5Mph).Still I am glad that you are happy with consumption of your X5.The best I have seen on mine ,not exceeding any speed limits was 28 Mpg!(I have the 20"s btw)

At the moment I am getting 11.3l/100km strictly around town driving. Out of a 93 litre tank I get approx 850 k's and only have done 5500k's on th clock.

I am very happy with the comsumption, I just cannot see how the petrol would be getting better fuel economy than the diesel?

For those in the know, should I expect to get better fuel consumption as the K's on the clock increase?
