Tranny Problem

It seems like this is a common problem:

1. When cold (aka my first drive of the morning) the motor will bang into 2nd from 1st. It won't do it again for the rest of the drive. Does the same thing in the evening when I leave the office.

2. Sometimes if I slow down to a crawl when going uphill (say a yield sign) I'll get on the gas again and the motor will spool up and the tranny will bang into gear (happens when tranny is warm or cold).

Mentioned this to the dealer but got the standard "Cannot reproduce" comment on the invoice.

Any suggestions?

Typically I do not sit and idle cars in the morning and that results in longer warm up periods which is actually worse for the car.

It's just that I've seen people complain about this often when they don't warm up their cars on cold mornings. My father experienced this problem on his e39 and was told to warm the car up. Just my $.02

I may be of some help as I had a very similar problem with my 3.0 diesel X5. It took 3 years of persistance by me and 2 transmissions but my dealer finally found a faulty inlet camshaft sensor in the engine was to blame. When the engine was cold the sensor would not relay the correct info to the engine management system which gave false readings to the transmission's computer. When it warmed up the sensor came on line again making it hard to detect under DIS test. Modern cars like BMW's are like the human body, if your head hurts, it's most likely your neck is out.

Good luck,

Transmission software update. It resolves the rough shifting.

Don't warm up the car excessively. 30 seconds tops is all you need, and all I ever do. During the summer, I practically start up and drive off.

Check the transmission fluid level. It sounds like it's low on fluid.

Wanna update you guys on my situation to help whoever had this problem. I had a similar problem, rough shifting when cold only from 1-2 gear and jerky when taking off from a roll. First I noticed 2 oil leaks under the car. They fixed it and said that the tranny fluid was low. Then they updated the software and it still jerked. So now I'm getting a new tranny and I'm hoping this will fix the problem. Thank goodness I'm under warranty.
