Whistle Noise only at high way speed (app. 80 mph)

I only hear a whistle noise on my 2002 x5 only at high speed around 80 MPH. I first thought it was coming from the radio or the wind. As I hear the same whistle noise, I realize there's something going on.

What could it be and had anyone have experienced anything like this, if so how had you fix the problem?

It's often the windshield seal.

If it's not he windshield seal then it might be the door seal adjacent to the windshield.

I've had the whistle, though not a constant noise, at speed...
since day one on our '01. That, and some considerable air
flow around the lower door panels and past the HVAC buttons;
this is felt on really cold days, at speed, on long trips.

Could never get either situ fixed by stlr(s)...gave up and I
live with it. I suspect the "prob" was reduced in the '03s, '04s
and so on, as assembly picked it up and corrected it.

I suggest you look into the sunroof seal. My 2001 4.4 X5 had the same issue. The easiest way to check it is to open and close the sunroof cover while you hear the whistle. If the noise changes you have your answer.

The seal is very easy to replace. The old pulls off. The new is held in with tape that comes pre-applied.

Check if it's the sunroof seal as supersteve described, then the easiest way to check if its a windshield seal is to apply a strip of tape (something pliable and low tack is preferred) across the top windshield seal then road test for the noise again. This noise is more common on E90s from the upper windshield seal, enough that the new seals have tape adheasive applied where they meet the body.
