Adaptive Transmission? - 2002 X5 4.6iS

Hi all,

Does a 2002 X5 4.6iS have the "Adaptive Transmission Control"? ie: the auto transmission system learns and adapt to the way the are is driven, adjust the timing of the gear changes accordingly.

If so, I would like to know how to "reset" this".

Thanks.

Yes sir, located in the right rear of engine compartment. Also referred to as AGS or EGS.

I saw a thread on secret options of the X5 that had some info on reseting. Can not remember but something about using the gas pedal all the way down... Now i can not find the thread in the search? It had a ton of pages and a lot of great info. Maybe someone can find it again. I found it when i 1st got my X5 a couple month ago.

That is the trans control module, officially called EGS.

And yes it does have resetable adaptations that affect driving/shifting characteristics. I'm not sure of a way to do it without the BMW diagnostic equiptment, but it is as easy as clicking a button "reset all adaptations" while in EGS control module functions in BMW's GT1 tester. But then you gotta pay the dealer to do it for you. (unless you know an independant that has the BMW tester)

just found this in another thread... maybe it will work for you, haven't tried it myself or heard of this procedure at the dealer. But its worth a try.

Use 30 secs reset method. It will solve the problem.
-Turn key to position 2. But dont start the engine.
-Floor the gas pedal for 30-40 secs.
-Release the gas pedal, step on brake and start the engine.
-Drive FORWARD (Not reverse, so make sure you are out of your garage before you attempt to do the transmission reset)

And don't forget, slapping that shifter to the left puts it in "sport mode" which does affect how long it holds a gear, shift points and rpm needed for downshift.
