What was the intended purpose of these lights? My '06 4.4 has them, but I couldn't figure out what they were meant to do.

They're just ambient lighting, for mood.

To clarify, if you have auto-dimming rearview and side mirrors with premium package installed, you get a LED puddle light on the mirror housing, two strips of light below the rear bench, and those LEDs in the door handles.

They were just a minor addition/change in the production cycle of the car. Just like the switch from adjustable rear seat belts to non-adjustable.

I had my door apart today to change the carrier. I did look for the lights, but there was nothing there. I did notice an extra wire with an empty socket. Is this where the lights attached to the factory harness? The empty wire on the bottom. If that is the wire, does anyone have the part number to order it? I would love to add this mod to my X.

Not too bad. Realoem doesn't have the most accurate prices. Probably can get it for around $50.

Hey Guys, since I've gotten so much help from mrbmwx5 here's a little retribution. I have a 2001 4.4 Sport and it has them installed, its for ambient as it lights the handle area with a dim amber tone as does the ones under the rear view mirror on the center console. The X is in the shop getting bumpers and flares installed but going there in a couple of hours and getting pictures of the door handle light and the angle at which they're installed.
