I'm with Mr D. It is absurd to me that people want to risk lives by having engines running while refuelling. It is also illegal in most places.

At a station I worked at many years ago, if someone tried it, we could hit the master switch inside the station and shut down all the pump islands immediately. We then explained to everyone in the process of filling why that had happened. We included a lecture to the offender. It never happened twice with the same individual.

Ten years previously that same station had burned to the ground (ownership changed at that time, I worked for a subsequent owner....).

Blocking a pump trigger on with your gas cap is similarly dangerous. It is not the same as using the lever that some pumps have. It can cause overfilling. Been there, seen it.

LOL Mr. D yes I have, but I guess I've always thought of myself above the game.
No worries, I'm changing my habits now.

We all think we are, until reality comes crashing in. Of course, EVERYONE can't be "above the game", now can they? Sounds sort of like that Garrison Keilor line about "all the children were above average".

One might add the danger of using cell phones
while you fill up as well. There is a warning on many gas pumps in California.http://tinyurl.com/8y454

Well, I must admit to having done it once or twice. UCrew mentioned the brutal winter in MI. Well, when it's 98 degrees outside with 95% humidity, and you have your wife, kids and/or a dog (or, as was the case with me once -- ALL of them) in the car, while you fill up in South Carolina in August, well... you'll think twice about turning your car off, trust me.

Again, I've only done it a couple of times. I do not normally do it, but, sometimes, the situation just calls for that.

Very dangerous. Engine off and cell phone off as well. Besides, with gas prices these days, who wants to spend money and waste gas !! Did you guys know that only 15% of your gas tank goes in moving the car, the rest is wasted (idle, engine friction, etc) I'll try to find the article I read before on this ...
