Question engine off when filling fuel?

Do you guys turn off your engine when filling fuel on your tank?

the manual says to turn it off or it will not fill into the tank and "service engine" lamp may come on( page 24 online edition for 2002)

Yes, the engine should be shut off. It won't happen every time, but failure to do so can result in a "SES" indicator triggered by the oxygen sensors response to the gas cap being open while the engine is running.

There's also valid safety and security reasons why it is a good idea to turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition before fueling the vehicle.

why would you want to refuel with the engine on?

Dead of winter when it's below zero and blowing snow it's definately tempting, and I will admit to doing it a time or two. But very rarely.

I'm pretty sure I'm an idiot.

I usually never turn off my engine in both of my cars (LS400 and X5) when filling up and no check engine light.

I don't turn it off in the LS430 nor the SL either.

UCrew, that is the situation to use the "REST" (residual heat) button on the climate control.

P.S. I should add, the 'REST' button is something that I is in my X5; but I noticed that my buddies' similar X5s, have a 'MAX' button in its place. Referring to the '04 manual, I see on page 107, the 'MAX' button can also perform the 'REST' (residual heat) function when the engine is off.

It would seem to be a model year change.

Last edited by Scotty; 09-16-2005 at 11:36 PM. Reason: added explanation of 'REST' button - not present in model year '03 & '04 ?

Ricky, I gotta agree with your first sentence. I'm surprised by some of the topics. Have you read the fuel pumps?

Hang on, is it even possible to refuel with the engine on. When I first got my X5, I went to fill up but couldnt open the filler cover. I tried all sorts, looked for secret buttons to open the cap etc. Then I removed the key from the ignition and I could suddenly open the filler. Maybe this is just a UK thing?
