I have exactly the same story as you from Australia.
Looked under the 2004 X3 (E83)'s 5 speed auto trans and it has a green sticker saying to use BMW part number 83220024359, which is Texaco ETL 8072B. Went to the BMW dealer to get some of this stuff and they said it's been superseeded by BMW part number 83220397114, which is basically Dexron VI. Price is AUD$80 for a 4 litre bottle. OK, give me 2 bottles please, I say. They bring out the bottles and it's not even BMW labelled. ![]() The fluid is made by a company called Petro-Canada. Going to put this stuff into the gearbox and hope it doesn't have any issues with the old fluid. The condition of the old fluid in the gearbox was shocking. It was like used engine oil, albeit very thin. I'm glad I'm changing it out. |

Since that date of my post, the X3's auto gearbox is still shifting smoothly and without any issues after the fluid change. So all I can say is that draining out the transmission's old fluid and putting in the Dexron 6 hasn't had any adverse effects. The condition of the original fluid in the gearbox was simply shocking - it looked much like used engine oil, although it did not smell burnt.
I'm just glad that at least half of that dark fluid is out and there's some fresh fluid in the gearbox. It's not possible to get it all out without a flushing machine. All I can say is that no fluid lasts forever, so forget about this "lifetime" concept and treat the fluid as some kind of "extended life" fluid - eventually heat and friction will take its toll on the fluid and break it down, so don't procrastinate - just get it changed. And buy fluid from your BMW dealer - just to be on the safe side. Last edited by tempestv8; 11-12-2011 at 03:00 AM. |

Mobil 1 is Dex6. At my dealer here locally, The service team manager, Laughed when I gave him all those numbers for BMW brew he said all they use is any DEX VI. They don't even use synthetic. Anyhow, M1 is DEX VI and here in the States it is $9/qt/ltr. I have had Mobil1 in my trans since 90,000 miles and I just turned 141,000. Absolutly no problems, I'm going to do a drain and fill x2 tomorrow. ![]() |

Just as i thought sweet that will help....I remember when i took my X before the 100K around 99K to do a tranny fluid change etc they quoted me 357 or so and i agreed when i came to pick up the car they were like um listen the computer only showed us the labor charge and not the oil charge i was like ok hold up when i call for an oil change its 99 right 'yeah" that included labor and oil and materials right...yea ok so now you want me to pay for the oil and the labor yea i was like what are you fucking kidding me? i was hell no its your systems fault im paying the 357 as agreed and not the 25/quart *15quarts etc i was like fuck no hahaha.
any how im glad that you responded im about to drop my tranny FIRST time to remove the torque converter (its fried) and i have to drain fluid so its perfect time i have 155K so i was planning on doing tranny oil at 150K im gonna replace the guibos too i might refresh the tranny while its out idk its all based on time. I do not have a back up car and i work slow since first time i rather double check all my steps. |

I've successfully changed out my trans fluid to Dexron VI and I've had no problems for over 40k miles. All Dexron VI fluid is synthetic, regardless of who's label or brand name is on the bottle. But all 5L40E transmissions are now recommended to use Dexron VI. Much easier to obtain than the Texaco fluid that was recommended before and less expensive when you flush out your fluid.
