Replacement running boards question..

Best choice for Aluminum Running Boards
I'm interested in installing chrome running boards on my 06 X5 3.0. It does NOT have flared fenders or mud flaps.

There seem to be several choices on eBay and other sites like Bimmian and Bavauto, ranging from $500 for alledged OEMs (see http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-X5-ALUMINUM-RUNNING-BOARDS-X5-STEP-E53-UP-TO-2006_W0QQitemZ270275799277QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 270275799277&_trkparms=72:727|39:1|65:12|240:1318& _trksid=p4506.c0.m245

to ~$300 for these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/X5-BMW-BRUSHED-ALUMINUM-RUNNING-BOARDS-STEP-BOARD-E53_W0QQitemZ110290886322QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item1 10290886322&_trkparms=72:727|39:1|65:12|240:1318&_ trksid=p4506.c0.m245

I don't know HOW they are installed (self adhesive tape?, screws?, other?) and which ones folks have had good experience with..

Also, does it make sense to do any other mods (ie flares, mud flaps) at the same time..?

Thanks as always

OEM is the best choice, IMO.

If you go with the running boards, you will only be able to install rear mudflaps.

Also, if you have running boards, you will need the fender flairs for running boards (there are two types).

I don't think you can have fender flairs AND mudflaps.

Not quite true. I have the OEM running board with Front/Rear mudflaps. There are two separate part numbers for the front flaps depending on whether you have running board or not.

Hi Ed....I hope all is well with you.

with Michelle!!

I did the oem running boards early last spring..I do not have "fender flaires" but the running boards do come with the "over the tire unflaired moldings for both the front and back.....you are taking off all the old moldings and plastic underneath the door also. I did a "DIY" on this mod......took me and my buddy 2.5 hours from tear down to build up... rememebr to get the green "plastic rivet" gun from NAPA.....makes life a whole lot easier when doing the instll if you DIY......also..I orderd my RB's from Morristown..they had the best price with shipping... I think for me it came to $575...shipped.. I know of others that came in even less than that!

Stay away from the ebay aftermarket stuff.you are paying almost the same price for not the best quality...IMO...

Take care,

Rich
