The clear wire is the door handle light. It snaps behind the door handle.

Well, my drivers side finally broke. I knew it was near, since it started getting worse every day. Does anyone know if the replacement part is updated to prevent the frozen door issue? I just want to make sure that while I have the door apart, I fix that issue as well.

THANKS!
Just wanted to say a big THANKS for posting this fix. THe instructions worked great. I replaced the carriage on my wife's 04 x5 in about an hour or so. Thanks again, and I'm sure if my wife knew about the site here, she thank you too... dig it!

My rear passenger door carrier broke recently and that was a more difficult fix. It's the same basic procedure but was more challenging fitting the carrier and getting the small hex screw to line up with the metal fake lock cylinder. That was a major PITA.

ok, I found the pics real helpful. There was one issue with trying to remove my door panel and it's located in the center. There is a clip that only let's you pull upward in order for it to release. Heck, I used a crowbar on mine and popped it out before I could visually see how it works.
Anyways, spend $125 tax included at my local BMW Stealership and installed the Carrier in about 1-1/2 hours. I had no time to look for the better deal since it's my wifes daily driver and it transports a 3 year old. All good now. I actually inspected where the part failed and it just pops right back together. It's a design flaw.

Are you talking about the black trim that goes around the lock post or the outside painted cover around the key lock? If it's the former, I didn't willingly take it off. It sort of crumbled on me and fell out. It's really thin plastic and old so some of the plastic at the base cracked and broke off.

Thank you for posting this excellent DIY guide. I just finished replacing my driver door carrier. Took me about an hour start to finish. The cable on mine had stretched to the point that I had to yank on the door handle to get it open. Got the part from my local dealer for $100.
