Repair Price Check
I have a 2001 4.4 with 90,000 miles. I've had it for 7,000 miles without an issue (and have no warranty). I took it into the shop (local indi with reasonable references) for a tune-up, oil change, brake light message and coolant leak. Here is what they found and are quoting: Oil Change: $111 Tune-up: $563 Front Brakes/rotors: $450 Coolant Leak: $1200 (Valley pan gasket, water pump, thermastat, etc.) In addition they found two other issues: Torn Axel $402 Valve Cover Gasket $479 Are these reasonable? As always, I appreciate the help. |

2) can't say about tune up until they tell you what you got on that $563 3)If they repalace front rotors(not machine or turn) then it's reasonable, make sure they change pads sensor just cause they are old. 4) I've seen the ste-by-step, to me it's worth it. Do you have to top off coolant like weekly? Try to park incline(front side higher than rear side) overnight and check for puddle of coolant on the ground if yes then maybe it's necessary. 5) Are you talking CVT for both left/right or just one side? 6) I thought #4 covers this as well. Both #4 and #6 are labor intensive the cost of parts is just ridicously low. Indy shops ussually gives 10-15% off for parts and some labor to BMW CCA member. |

The CVT is just one side. They quoted the valve gasket separate. I'm nervous to put this stuff off (and as you can tell by my email) I have no idea if this stuff is necessary nor priced reasonably. Hopefully, I don't have any other problems (but I am a little afraid to start the car and see what new messages are awaiting me). |

I too have a coolant leak, I found coolant on the garage floor this morning. I hope it's only a cracked expansion tank.. crap

You pretty much have to do all those...But the tune up? find out what they do. If they change the spark plugs, and what else? The "tune up" seems iffy. All the other stuff you have to do..

I was hoping for the expansion tank issue as well. I searched on "Check Coolant Level" and it seemed about 1/2 were expansion tank and 1/2 were valley pan gaskets. Today is just not my day (I dropped my Blackberry breaking the trackwheel as well. It wasn't when I heard the price of the repairs although that would be a better story).
The tune-up includes spark plugs, filters and I think all of the Inspection II checks. |

I have an 02 4.4 and here are prices that I paid from a dealer (under warranty) for some of the items you mentioned;
Valve cover gaskets - $660 valley pan gasket and water pump - $1800 I agree with teh others, find out what they mean by tune-up. I would imagine they are referring to inspectio I or II, which costs me about $300 and includes oil and filter, air filter, micro (cabin) filter, and fuel system cleaner. EDIT; I see that the tune-up included plugs. With that added into it, the price quote does not seem unreasonable to me. As long as they perform everything else required for Inspection II. |
