aftermarket warranty

hey whats up guys, need some advice, what is your opinion on aftermarket warranties and companies. i was considering a warranty for $1600, which supposedly covers my truck till it has 115,000 miles on it. it already has 67,000 and i feel like its going to act up like most cars do after 70,000. you reccommend it?

What type of coverage do you get with this price?

This topic is coming around on the ol'Jukebox pretty frequently these days, as many of our Xs get a lil' long in the tooth...

You might try Search here: some very recent multiple posts and threads on topic.

Imo, after digging hard for a monthish, I sprung for an Ext Warr. a week ago.
The only 2 co's I really liked/considered, after the dust had settled, was One Source and Warranty Direct. I went w/WarrDirect, though it was almost a toss up, but the WarrDirect phone rep was very good, non-pushy and I scored a couple hundred bucks off the regular quote.

While I did not canvas/investigate every 3rd party warr. co. on the planet, I really believe that One Source or Warranty Direct are the 2 premier companies in terms of history, testimonials, BBB beefs, real "coverage", ease of use, and that both use decent "backing companies" that are the true risk takers/money behind the curtain.

A 100 buck deductible helps the cost containment, and I also added "Emissions Coverage", as my '01 3.0 has zip coverage on emission related parts, Other than Cat Converter, after the oem warr expires. Emission coverage is cheap in most "packages" and worth a hard look, imo.

Also, don't get dreamy eyed over the "mileage" that most offer: it works off the odo in almost all cases and is seldom really huge mileage on top of the existing odo reading, e.g.: I got a "75K miles pkg", but that plug will pull AT 75K, NOT 75K on top my current 46K.
The time value is moot, as most will not keep it that long and the mileage ticker will arrive much sooner than the calendar side.

Also, be aware that most Warr co's allow a "transfer" to a private party, but Not to a Stlr on trade-in,etc.

I saw some rock bottom priced warranties in my search, but could find little good about them...most stuff is you get what you pay for.

I debated long about tossing our '01 for a new X3, et al...but, in the end, I really like the X5, I "know it", it was paid for four years ago, and I felt that a $2G ext warr. which gives me about 2+ more years of "mileage coverage" was a good deal, in lieu of tossing another $25Gs at a new X3 w/trading in our X5. So, we are keeping our X5.

Although many here report great results in running without an Ext Warr, I would not run this beast w/out that safety net. It is a crap shoot and $2 G bet that I will use $2,000 worth of warr. work. It's your pick.

The time to get an Ext Warr is Before your current oem Warr. expries, as many companies require an "inspection" if you are well past oem warr. miles or time.

Good hunting...my 25Cts has run overtime.

Thanks for the informative post, MD. Warranty Direct have several packages...which one did you end up going with (LuxuryCare, SecureCare, etc...)? Does it cover the common known issues such as window regulators, control arms, radiator, etc....or are those considered "wear and tear" items, which some of the coverage are not included?

They do cover all those items; they are not wear and tear. We have WarrDirect too. So far, dealing with them/claims has been a very pleasant experience . We have LuxuryCare for 4yrs/100k.

Do you have a link to this company? My warranty is up in November, so I need to start thinking about this.

SG:
Warranty Direct...
http://www.warrantydirect.com/

And, a "comparo" between OneSource & WarrDirect, strictly Fwiw and a "Consumer 101" on warranties; I liked them both:

DKL: I got the Secure Care which is one notch below the Luxury Care...I don't have any "high end electronics" to cover, and the top tier and my tier are pretty close. It's a pick 'em for what floats your boat.

I paid $2Gs for 4 yrs/75K miles with a $100 deductible...that's 75k miles Total on the existing odo, so I have about 30 K miles of real coverage, which should be 2 yrs+ for me. It also included the Add On emissions coverage. Prices are notching up a touch lately, and my price was based upon a "quote" from a month ago, plus some on-line discounts, plus a v.good phone rep, willing to work with me.

Exclusions are few and normal:

Exclusions:Battery; shock absorbers; manual transmission clutch assembly; friction clutch disc & pressure plate; throw out bearing; manual and hydraulic linkages; GPS/navigation systems; safety restraint systems; glass; lenses; sealed beams; bulbs; brake rotors & drums; TV/video/game systems; weather strips; exterior body parts/ornamentation; paint; upholstery & carpet; tires; wheels/rims; phone systems; exhaust and emissions systems.

(Unless optional Emissions coverage has been purchased and indicated on membership card. See below for coverage)

Maintenance services and parts described in your vehicle's owner's manual as supplied by the manufacturer. (i.e. oil changes, tune-ups, brake pads, belts, hoses and spark plugs)

* * * * * *

The Opt. Emissions Coverage covers the following:

Optional Emissions Coverage:

Air Fuel Ratio Sensor, Air Induction System, Air Pump, Anti-Knock Sensor, Barometric Pressure Sensor, Canister Purge Solenoid, Deceleration Valve, EGR Recirculation System, EGR/EFE Thermal Vacuum Switch, EGR/EFE Valve, Engine Oil Fill Cap, Fuel Fill Pipe and Cap, Fuel Fill Neck Restrictor, Fuel Receptacle, Fuel Sensor, Fuel Tank Pressure Control Valve (PCV), Fuel Temperature Sensor, Idle Air Control Valve, Intake Air Resonator, Intake Air Temperature Sensor, Intake Manifold, Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) Sensor, Mass Air Flow Sensor, Oil/Air Separator, Oxygen Sensor, PCV System, Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Secondary Air Injection System, Throttle Body Assembly (MFI).

I have had no "use" of this warr., so time will tell how they work. Both WarrDirect and OneSource appear to be the companies of choice from my digging.

I am Not pitching WarrDirect or OneSource OR getting an Ext Warr. of any kind. This is for info purposes only and "do your own DD" as they say on the stock boards, lol!

I've had very good luck with 1Source, on my son's Explorer. The only point of caution...make sure that your dealer will honor their warranty, so that you don't have to pay out of pocket for repairs, then get your money back from the warranty company. A lot of dealers will not accept payment from the warranty company, because of chargebacks. 1Source pays the dealer by credit card, which makes some dealers nervous, because of the possibility of a chargeback.
