X5 4.6is to M5 engine

How hard/impossible would it be to convert a 4.6is to a 5.0L V8 and tranny from an M5. It may be a dumb question but just was thinking. Thanks

IMO, you would be better off and in less of a hassle supercharging it and upgrading various engine parts. But if you do decide to swap in an M5 engine, there are a lot of things you have to change such as the tranny, and... whatever the list is so long.

I was contemplating this myself, and figured the trans from the m5 would be the best bet... but it isn't as easy as swapping from auto to manual as an old mustang or something. The DME, DSC and EGS software is highly intertwined and use signals and inputs from eachother and actively communicate through PT-can bus signals. They use load signals, rpm signals, torque requests, road speeds etc. to know what they are doing with eachother.

If you were to remove the auto trans and add a manual you would pretty much have to replace the whole wiring harness, likely have to fabricate your own... and have to change the whole vehicle order through a custom complete vehicle programming in which I couldn't begin to think of where to get the software programming and encoding data from. I pretty much figured it would be impossible from a software and wiring standpoint for someone that doesn't have unlimited funds and resources as a big company specializing in this kinda thing as when people like Hamaan BMW put M5 engines in Z4s and 3 series and the like.

Some of us have modded our X's with either AC Schnitzer, Alpina or Dinan...and have gained significant results. I even considered the supercharger by Dinan but heard BMW is developing an X5 ///M. It's currently in it's testing phase. Why not just wait it out? ... ...

We'll see about that.....I'll bet you $20 it ends up as an "is" model. The 4.6is was touted to be exactly the same thing...but they ended up scavenging a motor from alpina and calling it an "is"

If you wish to use the search function, you will find plenty of confirmation including pics from our very own Agent Palbay. Fact of the matter is, both Cayenne Turbo and ML63 AMG have found a niche market (even the Jeep SRT8)...BMW is now launching a high-performance version of the X5. It has even been confirmed by BMW M GmbH boss Ludwig Willisch. They applied for X5/X6 M trademark sometime this year.
