weasel56, A quick update...did the 2 crankcase hoses, had the codes cleared...only to come on again a day later....bummer, thought i was golden. They are the same two codes P0171/74. Where abouts is the one you mentioned previously
Don't forget the one by front of the passengers side exhaust manifold, to the secondary air valve. That one is usually the first to go. also didn't like the sound of the manifold separating! I have noticed no acceleration when i 'kick down' on the gas, the engine gets up to 5k rpm but no acceleration.....any idea's....thanks for all your help

What I was referring to there was a vacuum hose to the secondary air control valve, but it only gets vacuum when that system is switched on. Usually the little vacuum hose gets dry/brittle at the nipple from heat. It would be the little vacuum hose that goes to #8 on this link.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...26&hg=11&fg=50 But that hose is not the likely cause of lean mixture faults. I'm guessing you have a 4.4i since you said you changed the vent hoses... And I'm also guessing you're getting the same lean mixture faults as the OP?

Holy cow! blue and white hose cracked at the nipple.....correct!, yep i just got back from fixing that, thinking that was it, but no luck still lack of acceleration when i put the pedal to the floor? also correct 01 4.4 with 130k on it, great car, drives great just have the P0171/74 codes showing up and cannot get through emmisions with that showing up

Well that small of a vacuum leak would not cause much of a lack of accelloration. And if the fault comes back the next day it is likely either a decent sized leak or whatever else can may affect the fuel mixture. Unfortunately it may take going into a shop for diagnosis with proper equipment. If you have a shop you usually use ask them if they have a smoke tester as nothing can find a big/hidden leak faster than pumping smoke out of it, and there is a vent pipe/hose that runs under the intake as part of the crankcase vent system that you can't see to check without removing the intake.

If the crankcase hoses were both shot, it's likely the oil return from the separator is in just as bad condition at the soft joint. At higher mileages on the M62 engine it is usually needed to just do it all at once. What I usually do is remove the manifold, replace all gaskets including the front and rear plates of the manifold and throttle body gasket. While the manifold is off I'd also replace the coolant valley pan.
And since you already replaced the top 2 hoses to the valve, you should replace the one from the bottom of the separator valve... but that ones more of a bitch to get to.

#10 in this link is the oil return from the bottom of the separator and #12 is the one that runs under the manifold I referenced a couple posts ago.

Well you could check #10 first as that you could probably do, but the whole job is all but inevitable in the long run... no gaskets last forever, unfortunately.
