Imo, in the world of motors and crazy ideas out there in mod-land,
"Anything" is possible. In reality, unless someone just dropped off a crated M5 motor, (and trans), in your driveway, And you have about 15-20Gs for the retrofit, (accent on fit), you are dreaming. For just the price of a used good cond. M5 motor, you could mod the hell out of your 3.0 or, buy a barely used 4.8 w/trade in or, buy 2 new motorcycles and a vacay... But, dreaming is great isn't it?! GL,md

1.Check out the engine mountings on your x5 and on the M5 engine to see if you can adapt them. 2.Check out the gearbox in your X5 and take note of any alterations that have to be made and if these are possible(I am assuming that you are not buying the M5 engine with a gearbox!). 3.If you are happy with 1,2,then ensure that you ONLY buy the M5 engine with the ECU and the respective wiring. 4.Now comes the hard work, but if you managed to get this far then altering air-filters (the M5 has 2!) and exhaust systems on either side, and connecting up all the wiring will be satisfying work in the long run. You might also consider getting the M5 engine with gearbox but perhaps the gear ratios are not too well suited to the X5. Good luck...If I can be of further help let me know! |

You will also need new suspensions and new brakes, I can imagine the x3 3.0 being able to handle such and engine without new suspensions/brake.

The M5 block is the same block and should bolt right up to the stock tranny. I believe the tranning can handle the HP so that should not be a problem. I think the big headaches would be retrofitting the ECU and wireharnesses and all the other supportive hardware. While it sounds like a really cool Idea...for the same money you do a Dinan S3 and probably have a faster vehicle and one that is more desirable are resale time.

I'm pretty sure it's not the same block.. S62 is a dry sump motor. Add another question to this... what are you gonna do with the AWD??
you can make anything fit.. the question is how much do u want to spend Quote:

The M5 tranny isn't exactly just going to bolt up to the transfer case either, so you'd have to use the 4.4i AUTO transmission. Having an automatic M5 engine just beat the purpose of the swap.
