My first X5
I am considering buying my first X5 I’m looking at a 2004 4.4l , but before taking the decision I have some questions… and I hope you knows the answers. I have read that a new four-wheel drive system was introduced in 2004… but have all 2004 models the xDrive system ? or do I have to look for some special models ? Has all 4.4l 2004 models the 315 hp (242 kW) engine ? or do I have to look for some special models ? And what do I have to be careful about… I know this is a dangerous question on this forum …but what are the weak things on a X5…. Engine ? transmission ? … or ?Best regards Peter |

All 2004 X5's came with XDrive and the Valvetronic engine. No need to look for specific models (other than 4.4i vs. 4.8is, assuming you are looking only at V8's)
Common issues are window regulators, final stage resistor, etc. - but not too much to worry about on a 2004. :xoutpost:

For those that have sunroofs - I believe that earlier 2004's have a smaller sunroof relative to later model 2004's. Also, there are other features that later model 2004's have that earlier 2004's do not, such as adaptive Xenon headlights...

![]() I dont know if you're in Copenhagen or not, but it seemed to me that X5's there, were all over the place!...I guess that says something about the X...Nowhere did I find them more plentiful than in Stockholm.... They were more common than taxis!

be careful with your info. all X5's have Xdrive, yes, no matter what year. It was redesigned for 2004. check packages avaliable for certain options like sport and premium models. the home page here is great for info as well as consumerguide.com in the auto section. it shows model year changes.
good luck! |

2000 - 2003 X5's do NOT have x-drive, but a solid 68% rear bias torque split. The 2004 and up has x-drive which has actuated clutch pack in the transfer case which transfers more/less power to the front wheels to help compensate for oversteer and understeer, as well as help with traction loss situations per axle. Someone on this site has done a legnthy writeup on checking yourself: http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/g...e53-years.html Or you could have the full vin feature decoding done by the dealer to see what's installed and what options it has.

Not to quibble Weasel, but I'm pretty sure the "split" on pre-Xdrives,
eg my '01, is ~40/60 front to rear. You are correct though: the XDrive and its later refinements is much different than my '01 AWD. BR,mD
