BMW X5 goes 200,000 miles!

I bought this BMW X5 3.0 in December of 1999. The 3.0's had
only been out a few months. It has sport pkg. It has had $$$
of repairs, mainly to running gear to keep it rolling.
I've never had a car this long. I'm thinking of keeping it as an
experiment. It burns no oil (when the oil separator hose is
connected.....mine rotted off and dumped oil for a month before
I figured it out), seems to perform as when new in basic operation.
Body stuff were very problematical. At window regulator #5 I decided
to take engineering in my own hands and through bolted the
clips to the glass.......no more issues and no more $200 parts.

My indy mechanic is forecasting 400,000 miles. I've never changed
the transmission fluid as per BMW lifetime recommendation. We'll
see!

I also only run regular gas and use Mobil1 Syn 15w50 in last couple
years. I mainly used 10w40 Mobil 1. Went to 15w50 cause that's what
I put in my Jetski. Change oil about 12K to 15K. (Note this is an edit
from first post, it was typo on my part)

Oh guys, notice my black electrical tape fix for the check engine light?
It's been on for 6 years......nobody ever could figure out why it was
on.......yeah I did the gas gap, prayed over it, etc..........

The pix were taken while hauling my 260hp supercharged Kawasaki
Ultra 250X jetski to the Hydrodrag races in Sebastian, FL.

Sounds like you have had a good ride so far, could you list major repairs?

I type pretty fast.....but this is a condensed list
3 CV axles
2 sets of rotors, 3 sets brakes
2 AC resistors
5 window regulators
water pump - done as PM at 100,000
belts
Oil separator hose
3 sets of spark plugs - 1st at 100K, others just felt like it
Valve gasket
fog lamp light
lots of turn signals and tail lights til I figured it
wasn't the bulbs but holders. Just clean up connections
and you don't have to buy the whole piece
ABS brake sensors - DIY clean up, plus fixed one broken wire
passenger visor broke - at $250 forget about it.....
back cup holders broke - hey they don't need to drink anyways!
battery - at 3 years, still on Sears replacement
transfer case - biggie, went reman for $850 + $500 labor. BMW OEM part is $2200 My Indy garage rolled his eyes on this choice, 2 years later
runnin' good
On 4th set of tires - Michlein all the way. Had to put on 2 Bridgestones in
an emergency, one blew at 15K and the other was shot at 40K. M's
get you as much as 80K! Mine are 18" as per sport pkg, less
revolutions/mile
Gas cap - lost mine somehow - where was that bar??

Wow 200K--congrats. I just turned 84K on my '01 3.0 (Prem/Sport just like yours)--I guess I have some making up to do on the miles . I agree 100% Michelin is the way to go--I almost got 70K miles on my 1st set.

Tom, Congrats on the 200K!

Interesting to see how it continues to go for you over the next
year(s)...I hope you run the sumbitch to 400K.

Also of note is the "regular gas" and the 15W-40 oil...makes the
"Premium gas/only BMW oil" crowd here, fairly obvious, imo.

Love the CEL cover up, too!

Congrats on reaching 200k.
Interesting that you use 15W-40. I didn't know Mobil 1 even came in a 15W-40 weight.
