Engine tick on startup
I used Mobil 0x40. Few days ago I changed my oil to 5x30 and got a BMW oil filter from the dealer and no more ticking in the morning, even with the temperatures around 30F Just FYI if someone has this problem too - change your oil and FILTER to BMW brand and that might help

Many people have had problems with aftermarket oil filters, def use OEM. Oil doesn't matter, that M1 0W-40 you were using is very good.

I read somewhere that it's common that Mobile one causes vanos lifter noise. I always use OEM engine oil though. |

it seems to me bmw synthetic flows better than mobil 1 just by comparing how quickly a quart container empties when i have performed an oil change on my vehicles. but maybe iam just nuts.

Technically speaking the M1 oil you were using is more synthetic than the BMW oil, since the M1 is a GroupIV oil v. the BMW Castrol oil which is GroupIII.

First I've heard of an oil filter having this type of affect. I'd be interested to know why.
I think the ticking changed because the oil was changed from 0 40 to 5 30. Too low (thin or light) = Metal-to-metal contact (friction and wear), poor sealing and increased oil consumption. Too high (thick or heavy) = Increased fluid friction, reduced energy efficiency, higher operating temperatures and equipment starting difficulties particularly at cold temperatures. Sound right? |
