Question 2001 X5 Mass Air Flow Sensor

Dear Forum-

I usually purchase parts through RockAuto.com; however, I'm trying some other avenues of part purchasing and came upon this for a MAF:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-M...Q5fAccessories

Seeing that it's nearly $200 cheaper than RockAuto, I'm a little worried about going with it, even if it's tempting.

Any recommendations or opinions?

Well you don't know the quality of it, or even who manufactures it as it has BMW and bosch reference #'s. But at that price if you really need a MAF sensor then it's worth a try.

Why do you need one anyways?

I've got an Actron scanner and it's been throwing "Bank 1 Too Lean" for a while now. I'm thinking of selling the X5 and think it may sell better without the SES light on.

Thanks for any help and I'm thinking for that price I'll give it a whirl if it will fix the code.

Oh and I've tried cleaning it with the CRC MAF Cleaner, no luck, so I figured it should be the MAF or maybe the O2 sensors?

Usually a slow MAF will give you too rich faults. Too lean is usually unmetered air being introduced into the system. It is likely that you have a vacuum leak in the induction system or crankcase ventilation system. But there is a chance it will fix it, but that is not the common fail/code for the MAF for that code.

Is there a test I could do using a Voltmeter on the MAF? Maybe a resistance range or something? I may remember wrong, it may have said "Bank 1 Too Lean/Rich," I just can't remember now since the last read/clear, haha.

Oh and I replaced the two rear vacuum hoses near the firewall, I definitely had a leak there for a while.

Did you check the common leak points yet? Which do you have 3.0i, 4.4i, 4.6is, 4.8is?

Sorry 4.4i and I suppose I haven't really done the homework on a vacuum leak, since I replaced the two rear hoses and haven't seen anything obvious in the intake system. I just locked onto the MAF remedy I guess...

What should I look for?

First I'd check the 3rd hose to the vent valve, it is shorter, and is the drain hose at the bottom of the vent. (gotta be flexable..) Or it could even be the manifold gaskets getting old/dry and leaking. It could really be a number of things, which is why it really helps to have the proper testers and equiptment for testing. The easiest way to find a vacuum leak is with a smoke tester, but not all shops have them.

It may be worth getting a proper diagnosis done, as long as it is by someone who actually knows how to test to find the real problems. Some shops just guess for problems like this and throw parts at it, which you can do yourself.

Well, I'm glad to get some good info from an actual tech. Thanks.

I'll get really detailed in my check, as I would like to try and fix this thing DIY. If I had a vacuum gauge, could I check somewhere on the valve cover? I need to go to bed now, it's been a long day, but thanks again for the help.

I'll dream about factory warranties...

Have a good one.
