A/C Stink - Where/What to Buy?

I'm having problems with "stink smell" coming out of the A/C in my X5.

I have an activated charcoal cabin filter on the way which I'll be installing, however, I think it would be a good idea to also do the "bug bomb" that's been recommended in the past.

Can anyone recommend where I can purchase the fogger type "bug bomb"? The only place I can find it is on the net in the UK and they don't ship to the US.

BTW - I've also read that some people have sprayed Lysol directly into the outside air intake under the hood - anyone tried this?

Which way is the best way to go to get rid of the stink - bug bomb, Lysol, other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

bsp - thanks for the info.

Has anyone with this problem tried Lysol disinfectant spray - supposedly it has the same active ingridients as the more expensive sprays such as Frigi Fresh...

Weasel will become famous soon enough
We sell a 2 can system at my dealer (Peake BMW) which has the bug bomb style can for the interior and a can to spray in through the outside intakes. It is by Winzer. If you call the parts guys might be able to ship it to you, or your local dealer might have the same stuff or something equivalent. Our front counter guys didn't even know we had the stuff until I bought it over the counter, the back counter guys that work with the service shop were the ones who always sold it through the shop. I just did it to my X last weekend, and had done it to my mothers E39 last year. Haven't had a problem since!

Our number at Peake BMW is 504-469-6165 if you want to try our stuff.

I've been using Lysol for our BMW's with good success.

The first application will get rid of the smell for a few days. Once the smell comes back, do another application and it should be fine.

We don't have any stinky smells anymore, and I believe we did the Lysol trick 3-4 times over the summer.

Weasel - thanks for the response and info. What you described is exactly what I'm looking for but I cannot find it anywhere, even online. I'll give the guys a Peake a call to see if they are interested in shipping.

I've gotta believe this product is available somewhere in the US???

If I cannot find the Winzer stuff, sounds like Lysol spray will have to do.

This evening I treated my X for the AC stink that's been driving me crazy.

First I removed my existing cabin filter and cleaned some leaves and debris that had accumulated over time in there. I then opened all the windows, put the AC on full drawing air from the outside and spray Lysol into the intake and cabin filter area several times. I let the AC run for about 5-7 minutes in this mode.

Took a break for 30 minutes and went back at it...put the air on max in recirculation mode with the windows closed and sprayed Lysol in the air recirculation intake in the front drives side and passenger side under the glove box and let the AC crank for few minutes.

Finally, I installed my new cabin charcoal filter.

So, we'll see if this treatment was effective and for how long.

Hey Weasel,

Where are the intakes on the 4.8? Sometimes when the car is parked for a bit I get a "stale" smell, I am not sure if it is from bacteria in the AC or what, but I would love to DIY but just don't have much knowledge of where the intakes for the AC are on the 4.8.

Also, Would I still have to do the bug bomb if it is just the smell coming from the vent? Or is the bug bomb just kind of an overall good smellifier .
