Transmission kick/jerk b/t 1st and 2nd under load

My 06 4.4i did the hard slam into 2nd, or sometimes if only in 2nd and slowing to a stop it'd slam into 1st. Only when car was cold.

Throttle adaptation procedure was the cure for me. I could hear a click sound when doing the adaptation, but it may have been a bit longer than 30 seconds. The slam would reoccur 4 to 6 months later, then I'd just do the adaptation and all would be good for another 4 to 6.

At ~60k, I changed transmission fluid (Lifeguard 6 for my machine) and it really made a difference in the shifting during acceleration, much crisper. However, I'd still get the low gear slam. The only thing that worked for me was to do throttle adaptation. I never had the dealer attempt to service as I'm sure I would have gotten the "can't replicate" response (great at taking quarters from my change holder during service, but lousy at actually fixing things).

At 100k I changed my filter / fluid with Redline D4 and it made a HUGE difference in the crispness of the shifts. I couldn't agree with you more about resetting the adaptations. I do it with every oil change

Thanks man i will give another try tonight with more than 30sec...hope it will works...i will re- post the output of it...as for the tran fluid, mine is original...life time debate on do or not do...and now, not sure what to do ?

My advice, along with that of many others on the forum, Change It !!!

If you have the ZF, they as the manufacturer have recommended fluid & filter changes. ZF doesn't call it lifetime. BMW calls it lifetime, but their view of lifetime is rather short. The margins on service work are typically pretty good .

You will find some who get concerned on changes if the fluid is original and the vehicle is high mileage. I changed mine at 60k and the results were great.

Make sure you get the correct fluid. thectsc.com is a good source based on my experience. bavauto.com is another.

I"m at 72k miles, i guess this is not considered as high milage so i am qualified.
Not sure if mine is ZF ... What is this anyway ? sorry i'm not too familiar with that.
I have a good mechanics and he knows BMW, any specific i have to tell him ?
Now i have to make sure i find the correct fluid...i'll check on the site thectsc.com.....or go with bigblack reco.

I have an 02 4.6is with 121k miles and the transmission when in park makes a pronounced hissing noise and slips quite a bit only when under load between 3-4 and at around 2100-3200 rpm

ZF is the manufacturer of the transmission likely used in your car. I base this off you having the same year & model I had (recently sold....still miss it!). ZF is a really good manufacturer of transmissions.

There may be some folks who feel you could use a different fluid than the ZF fluid, but my opinion on this transmission is to only use the Lifeguard 6 fluid, if your car has the 6HP26 model (I think that is the correct model, but don't quote me on that! It should be in the 6HP2X family.). The oil is not like typical red transmission fluid, it is yellow in color and much more the consistency of gear oil.

Have your mechanic confirm what transmission you have, and be sure they use the correct fluid. You are fine on mileage. 2 options, just a drain & fill or you could have them drop the pan and put in a new filter too. CTSC sells a nice kit to do the job.

You can source the transmission filter / gasket from any parts distributor and you might want to change the mechtronic electrical sleeve at the same time ( $5 part that is worth changing while you have the pan off ). Make sure you clean the magnet's in the pan also!!

No reason to use Lifeguard 6 @ $25 / qt. There are multiple options, I went with RL D4 because it was available and price effective.

The color of the fluid means NOTHING at all!
