Yep, that is the common noise caused by bearing wear in the pulleys. I'd change the alternator belt, idler pulley and tensioner pulley of that belt. Should cure it. And the pulleys are not hard to change at all, but keep in mind there are 2 kinds of belt tensioners available, mechanical and hydrolic. You can check out RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog to see the difference.

maybe the tensioner wasn't tightened properly and a bit tension on belt lost. you can check the tension and re-tighten it if ncessary. also apply some belt dressing might help as well.

My 05 X5 used to make this high pitched squeal on first start but has stopped since the dealership converted the mechanical tensioner to a hydraulic one (SIB 11-04-03).

I feel pretty lucky, no whine or squeal at cold start for me. From the description it sounds like a belt or bearing in one of the pulleys.

The only other idea past the tensioner not pulling the belt tight enough is a slight misalignment of one of the pulleys. The belt rubs on the edge of one of the pulleys and until the belt warms up the rubber squeals against the edges/lip. If you can isolate which area by listening with the hood up that would be a start.

Definitely seems to be a common issue. Foose, my 05 3.0i makes the same noise in the morning. Haven't taken it anywhere yet, but sounds like taking it somewhere may not do me any good anyway, besides emptying my wallet a bit.
