It's kinda dissappointing how many of us have the same issues. And trust me, I love the brand as much as the next guy.

Ours too...'06 3.0 with 48k and it started this winter on cold starts. We had belts done when it was bought as a CPO last Feb and recently the nose came up and the dealer did the usual pulley replace routine and the noise went away. Mostly. There is still a slight whine on cold starts but it is significantly better. I'm considering it fixed.

Good luck to all in the middle of this one and one piece of advice I would give is to be persistent, yet polite, to your local dealer's service adviser for best results. If they can;t duplicate the problem one day one...insist it stays for a few days or simply bring it back when the problem is more readily demonstrable.

CHECK THE TENSIONER PULLEY PROBABLY THE BEARING IS FREEZING UP AND CREATING A NOISE ON COLD STARTS. IT COULD ALSO BE THE IDLER PULLEY AS WELL.

My 4 year old belts were doing this too at first just when cold then eventually constantly. They might just be loose you could try tightening them. I changed my WP recently so I removed the water pump pulley and dampener for cleaning. Use some q-tips and alcohol to clean out the guide channels on all of the pulley surfaces (compressor and alternator too) also clean the tensioners. Mine are squeak free now. and Both contitech serpentine ac compressor and drive belts can be had for around $40 from autohausaz. For what its worth the belts I took off visually looked good with no cracks so I am not certain exactly what fixed the problem for me.

I replaced the idler and tensioner pulley today as well as the belts. The tensioner and belts had no signs of wear. However the a/c pulley and idler pulley are questionable. I hope this solves my problem...

2001 X5 3.0i add my car to the list. Annoying squeaking noise every day at cold start up. Goes away when it warms up and when I give it gas it disappears and then comes back. Took it to the inde shop and they replaced the idler pulley but the noise persists. I'm going to convert over from mechanical to hydraulic see if that fixes it.

You need to replace the tensioner pulley.
