Engine swap
I now have the car (sans engine) and want to put a replacement engine in her. I wonder if anyone has direct experience regarding what options I have for this. I have found a 4.4i from a 2002 and several 4.6's from newer models. I also have the idea of using a 3.0 from a 2005. My son will be getting his license in a few months and this would be a good car for him. For obvious reasons, the smaller engine appeals to me. Any feedback is appreciated. Jim

Unless you are prepared to build a custom wiring harness, and design new software, your options are realistically limited to putting in the exactly same engine as came out of it.

Seems to me that the vehicle software will be specific to the engine, the transmission, and the rest of the vehicle. If you want to ignore the codes it throws, and not have all of the ancillary systems functioning as designed, you can probably do anything. But why would you?

Transfer case, diff, trans and engine mounts, etc etc etc will all be different to a 3.0. The only plausible upgrade would be to a 4.6is if you have 00-03 4.4. You'd still have to replace a lot of control units and wiring.

actually the 4.4 gets better mileage, than ALL the other engines in an X5
