Engine swap

I posted a thread a few weeks ago regarding the over heating of my 4.4i at the transmission shop and subsiquent total loss of the vehicle by the insurance company.

I now have the car (sans engine) and want to put a replacement engine in her. I wonder if anyone has direct experience regarding what options I have for this. I have found a 4.4i from a 2002 and several 4.6's from newer models. I also have the idea of using a 3.0 from a 2005. My son will be getting his license in a few months and this would be a good car for him. For obvious reasons, the smaller engine appeals to me.
