warranty
I have a quick question which I could not find the answer to with the search tab. How much time do I have to extend my warranty? My warranty is until 2011 but the oil changes and brakes are only until this April (so about 3 months). Do I have to extend it before April or 2011?
Thanks guys!

Little more information required. I assume you are in Canada, given the flag, the Edmonton address, and the Edmonton license plate frame.
You have a 2005 model, but note that you have warranty until 2011. That doesn't sound right. Did you buy something extra up front to top up the 4 year warranty? Or is it a CPO? All vehicles in Canada have the maintenance plan (not warranty) for scheduled services only (it doesn't include brakes, just oil changes). Did you purchase Full Maintenance, which includes brakes? What is the term? What specifically do you want to purchase for warranty beyond 2011? The program may have changed, but when I asked about extending my standard warranty (in Canada) BMW did not offer the extended warranty. The only options were aftermarket insurance policies through the dealership. So, not really a quick question

sorry I guess you are right it isn't really a quick question. You're correct I'm in Canada and have a 2005 4.4i with 40000 km. I bought the x5 from another owner who had it for a month and he told me that it has extended warranty up until 2011 because the dealership had thrown it in to finish the deal. I went to the dealer where the x5 was purchased from and asked them about my current warranty and they told me it does have extended warranty on all parts up until 2011 but the oil changes and brakes etc. are only until April 2009. Specifically I just want the warranty to cover all the things it is covering until 2009 on my current warranty except I don't need things like the oil changes and brakes to be covered. There probably isn't a warranty available exactly like what I want but I just wanted to know if it is too late to purchase warranty after my original warranty has expired. Sorry if it's a little confusing to understand. Thanks for your help!

Suggest you go back to your dealer and ask them. You seem to have a specific warranty package from that dealer. What do your different warranty policies say?
You are mentioning oil changes and brakes in the same phrase, and that just doesn't sound right. Oil changes are part of the maintenance package, and are not warranty. Brakes are generally considered wear items and not covered by warranties. Brake wear can be covered by a maintenance plan, but in Canada brakes are only covered if you purchased an additional maintenance plan (called Full Maintenance) over and above the scheduled maintenance plan. Maybe your vehicle has a separate Full Maintenance plan as well. Your warranty doesn't expire until 2011. If there is an additional warranty available it would normally be available up until the expiry of the current warranty. YMMV. We can't say for sure. What is confusing in this is your reference to brake warranty. Has your dealer confirmed that there is any extended warranty available after 2011? My point was that there just wasn't such a policy when I enquired at my dealership. Maybe that has changed in the interim.

Don't you have any documentation from the seller of the vehicle?

I'm not sure if I have another warranty for brakes but when I was talking to my service manager he told me that my oil changes and if i needed brakes to be changed they would be free. I will talk to him about this again and make sure about what is going on.
I'm not fully sure about which warranties were purchased by the owner when he bought the x5 form the dealership but the previous owner told me that he has extra warranty until 2011, which he had bought for very cheap. Then I talked to my service manager to make sure I was covered until 2011 and he told me everything but oil changes and brakes is covered up until 2011. Maybe I have another warranty for brakes which also ends in April 2009. That is why my service manager told me that oil changes and brakes are not covered under warranty after April. I will confirm with the dealership as soon as possible. I'll also ask them about how much time I have to extend my warranty as well. Thanks for your help! You seem to know a lot about bimmers.

I called the dealership and asked about my warranty. I found out that my original warranty is until april 20 2009 but I have an extended warranty which begins after that until april 20 2011 or 160,000km. I asked what would be covered under my extended warranty and I was told that only certain things will be covered and they cannot give me an official list of the things covered because no one is allowed to see it except the service manager. The lady also told me that when I would bring it in for a problem they would check for the problem and then see if it is covered or not before replacing anything.
Now I'm worried about what is covered because what if all the things I take it in for are not covered on the mysterious list they have. Anyone know about this list.. Thanks

So BMW extended warranties are all from aftermarket companies or just some of them are? Also is it true that they can't let me know what is covered or are they just saying that?

I was just given a sheet which told me it was being transferred to me but it didn't say anything about what is covered. I guess I'll find out after the extended warranty begins. Thanks for the help JCL
