2004 X5 4.8 AND 4.6 DIFFERENCES ENGINE SWAP

Hello, all, i am new to the x5 world, i had nothing but 3 series, and a bunch of e36 M3s.

Any ways, i got this nice project 2004 4.8is X5, and its got a bad motor in it, i am working to fix it, but i have an opportunity to get a 2002 4.6 x5 with lots of Dinan stuff

So my question is HOW HARD IS IT TO PUT A 4.6 ENGINE in to the 4.8 X5, What would be the best easiest way of doing this if its at all even possible? Are blocks the same by chance or is anything interchangeable? Cause like in e36 the 328 2.8L and M3 3.2L is almost the same, same block and head just the cams are different and rods are different, even the ecu and all the electronics are the same! and its a .4 litter difference between the two, here its only .2 difference, i am hoping its similar thing. is it so or anything similar in this case?

Like can i drop the engine in and use the same electronics or harness or anything like that?

thank you so much!

here are pix of the 02 x5 i want to get to use for parts, whats the most i should pay for it?

You may want to get in touch with Weasel56 here on the forum....he has much insight to questions like this..

i'd like dibs......if you ever want to sell that Dinan Strut bar......if you could get your hands on it......

Best of luck with the swap... by the way......ouch!!

Those qualified to give feedback will chime in soon enough. Best of luck.

well if your getting the entire motor with the harness, i don't see why you could not swap it.

What about all the electronics/ECU? Are you saying that it would be plug-n-play to those systems?

I'm sure it's possible - nothing is impossible. However, I get the feeling what he's really wanting to know: "Is it fairly easy or how hard would it be to do it". Oops! That's exactly what he said.

I'm sure weasel will chime in later.

YEP, i don't want to be going through hell trying to make this work, i will only do it if its relatively plug and play, i don't want to have to rip out all kinds of electronics from under the dash and all that. Cause i know the tranny is different, but is it bolt on? you know all that stuff, and i have already contacted weasel hoping he will take a look at this.

thank you all for taking the time to look at this.

It will not work unless you use the 4.6 tranny and ecu and tranny software. better off fixing the 4.8 that is blown. take your time with it
