Primetime, you're a lucky one then. It would be good to know the version if you can get it.

This is a well known and documented problem and one that often times seems fixed only to recur again, thus the numerous SIB's on the issue. Mine was already reprogrammed twice and hasn't happened yet again, but we'll see. I experienced it so severely once when coasting to a stop that I was 1000% convinced I got rear ended. More often though I get "the lurch" when in Sport mode and it downshifts from 2nd to 1st. Everyone's head in the car bobs forward.

Thats crazy...What's wierd is it never happened to me in Sport mode, only in normal Drive mode for the bang..Sport mode has been clean..no real lurch in sport mode. Nothing significant. Were you in sport mode when you had the rear end "bang"?

Don't remember what mode it was in with the bang, I was so shocked at the time. I was alone in the car, and to my knowledge, alone on the road at the time so the bang for a split second convinced me that someone was really flying and slammed into me at the stop sign.

Having it happen in Sport mode sucks because I really enjoy driving in that mode, even though it burns gas like a SOB.

At any rate, I feel fairly certain that they looked at the programming issue. They said this step was to document the issues for the future in case there was a failure. I'm out of warranty now so I expect that there will be nothing covered if it fails.
What they did to bring the engineers in the loop was an email based tech line support called PuMA. Which means this is all well documented as to what they did and that this is a continuing problem from within the warranty period.

Now that the issues are more defined and consistant I'd bring it back in. Odds are they may replace the transmission, and should do it under the goodwill policy as the vehicle is just out of warranty, low mileage and a pre-existing problem from when it was in warranty. And once she is fixed, she will run like a new ride again allowing you to fall back in love with her!

Transmission Weirdness - Update

Called the service manager last week - since a history had been built earlier he agreed that it was reasonable to take another look and we set an appointment for today. The shop foreman took a ride with me when I dropped the car off and we discussed the things that are happening. They gave me a sweeet 328 as a loaner.

They have ordered what I believe is the traction control brain. The tech saw some intermittent communication issues (DME?) he didn't like and thinks that may be the problem - he was actually able to pull some codes - before, no codes were registered. So....the part will be in in about a week and they tell me it should be covered under warranty. I hope this is the fix!

FIXED UNDER WARRANTY!!!!!!

After an initial trip in for diagnosis and a follow up visit for installation of parts & reprogramming (they gave me a loaner both times), I can't believe the difference. I keep looking to see if it's the same X!

Turns out I had a DSC Module with an internal short, which has now been replaced, and they also reprogrammed the DME under a sevice campaign - SIB 12 04 08.

Hats off to Tom Williams BMW, who took care of this for me under Goodwill even though I am the second owner and I am past the warranty period. (They had opened a PUMA case on these issues while in warranty after I bought the car from an individual who originally purchased the car there).

I am a happy man! Thanks, Weasel, for advice on how to approach!

found out today from the stealer the previous owner had the update done on my 4.8is! I was asking them to put the old programming back, but they said it would have to come out of my pocket and then I realized that this update you guys are talking about was the one they had already done. I guess I will leave well enough alone.
