Quick 3.0 Oil change question

Dont get mad guys. I have read Hayaku's DIY and looks great. But after reading a couple of forums I just wanted to make sure I have all my facts right before I proceed tonight.

At the DIY he removes the oil filter first then does the drain.

Other sites states loosen up the oil filter case and drain the oil to prevent oil from coming out the oil filter case.

What is the right procedure? If I go ahead and just removed the oil filter case after getting the X on a ram will oil splatter or leak out?

Please advise

Thanks

I open the oil filter before I do the draining and I have no problems; this is with the front end jacked up. There's not much oil in the filter case when the car is off. Good Luck

It doesn't matter if you remove the oil filter first or the oil plug. You have to make sure the filter, oil filling cap and drain plug are all removed, the same time at one point so you can drain it properly.

Take off the oil pan bolt first. Loosen the oil filter cap to let in air while it's draining so that the oil drains out faster. Remove the oil filter after all the oil is drained.

There is no technical reason for doing it this way, it's just more efficient and cleaner. If you try to take the filter out before the oil is drained then you need to deal with a drippy oil filter.

It shouldn't really matter... but I always loosen the oil filler cap and remove the drain plug as the first step in an oil change (be it any of my cars or my motorcycles.) Then while it is draining, I go to work on replacing the oil filter. Once I am finished replacing the oil filter, I go back and tighten the drain plug while using a new crush washer, and then refill with oil.

I would say depending on which method you using to drain the oil.
If you sucking(fluid evacuation device) through dipstick, then leave for last.
When lifting the filter out you will get a little leaking. I use a plastic bag to envelope the filter as to not get drops on the floor or engine bay.
Wrap a cloth around the oil filter housing to catch the drops and lift slowly to allow some of the oil to drain back into the housing.
