Albert100... KICK ASS WORK. GREAT GREAT REPORT. Thanks for updating and posting.

Couple of things:

- Can you also attach a photo of what the new fluid looks like for comparison.

- I looked up the fluid p/n from your transmission sticker 83-22-0-024-359. Here is what I found in terms of part number updates:

83-22-9-415-976 expired 4/12/2000 Texaco ETL 8072B
83-22-0-024-359 expired 1/21/2005 Texaco ETL 8072B
83-22-0-403-249 expired date ? Texaco ETL 8072B
83-22-0-397-114 current p/n. BMW Dexron VI transmission oil. $72.89 for 4 Liters

- Is there any chance you can take the old filter apart so that we can see what it looks like inside? It's too bad you live so far away, a professional fluid analysis from Blackstone Labs would be fantastic. Blackstone Laboratories

- Update 7-14-10 added photo of OE BMW fluid thanks to martz.

I added my comments on photos.
X5 2003 3.0 L.

I just called to service station where I did change and asked them to do not throw out old filter.
As soon as I get old filter I'll disassemble it.

BMW is charging $18.23/liter? Wow!

Unlike Dexron III, GM is very tightly controlling the Dexron VI formulations and is not allowing much variance from one to the next. Dexron is GM's trademark, and to get a license to use the Dexron VI mark from GM, you have to comply to their spec exactly. Therefore, there are not going to be big differences between the different brands of DexVI and BMW cannot claim that theirs is special. You can easily get almost any other DexVI for $6/liter or so.

Well what can I say... I'm happy.
At this stage were used 7 quarts of fluid and after 300 km I'll change it again to renew.
Great post! Do you notice any difference in the way it drives? With Dexron VI, you should get a slight bump is gas mileage.

That's a bargain compared to the fluid for the ZF box... $635.16 for 20 liters = $31.76 / liter.

or the special transfer case oil which is MSRP $46.71 per liter!

Hello:

I would like to find out if you have a compabatible type of ATF for
BMW vehicles. Specifically for these two types of ATF:
1. Texaco ETL 7045E
2. Texaco ETL 8072B

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Some more questions if you don't mind:

1. Is MaxLife available at typical Auto Supply like PepBoys? (I haven't checked around and thought just ask this). If not, where can I buy it?

2. I learned Dextron VI could also be used. Is that true? Is MaxLife specs exceed Dex VI so it's actually better to use MaxLife?

3. I'm sure there'll be some original oil (Texaco's) remains in the transmission when I drain the old oil. Is that ok to mix it with MaxLife?

Our biggest supplier for the Valvoline MaxLife products will be Napa Auto Parts. Other suppliers will include Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Pep Boys, Checker/Checker Auto Parts, Carquest, and KOI. If these stores do not stock the products, please ask to order.
Dexron VI according to our listing is not compatible with those specs. However the MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF is a Full Synthetic and is compatible with Dexron VI.
The Valvoline MaxLife is approved for top-off or complete flushing of both of those specs. The fluid will mix with the existing Texaco product.
