Please advise what can I use instead of Texaco ETL 8072B

With everyones indulgence would like to revive this thread---- with that said is DEX VI basically Texaco ETL 8072B and or BMW part # 83 22 024 359 fluid ?

Wife owns a 05 X3- with 50k miles on it . Bmw stearlership charges an arm and a leg- literally for a liter of their trans fluid.....I know I'm beating a dead horse on this inquiry again, but Im such a worry nut, I do not want to end up with a 6k replacement bill months/miles later....

Your p/n is missing a digit. In any case, I believe the -359 p/n is old and has been superseded by 83-22-0-397-114 (see my post #42) which is Dexron VI. Having said that what are you going to use it for, a transmission or a transfer case? And also what does the sticker on the transmission of your X3 say?

Yes sorry - 1 digit less -pan says 83 22 0 024 359 and doing trans service. Does transfer case also take the same fluid? I had the impression it was different- pls clarify . Also if 359 is old and replaced by 114
this fuchs brand should work then= titan 6000- see link

which is available at 15$ a liter
or would valvoline syn VI suffice? then again if its a GM trans, Cant I just purchase a dex6 from a chevy dealership which they sell for 6.50 a quart?

Transfer case is different fluid. Dex III I think. I used D4ATF.

BMW and GM both only recommend Dex VI now. When I changed the fluid in my A5S390R, I had not seen anyone using Dex VI, so I went with a top notch Dex III compatible product: D4ATF.

No. Texaco ETL 8072B is BMW 83 22 0 024 359, which is, as far as I can tell, a run of the mill Dex III ATF. It is not Dex VI. 83 22 0 024 359 is just BMW's part number for Texaco ETL 8072B.[/QUOTE]

Are you looking to top off or change your fluid? I changed mine with Redline D4ATF:
