Navigation Retrofit

So i decided to tackle this. Only problem i'm not up for the challenge myself. I contacted my indie in the BX and they said $800 for the install. Sounds like a lot, i know it's a lot of work but $800 seems high. Anyone in the NYC area have someone who knows how to do this?

LIke i said - i don't want to tackle myself. I know, then i have to pay - but it doesn't mean i have to pay THAT MUCH. Please don't respond with "there's a DIY" - lol. Not interested.

Joking of course. Some people have done it and could definitely help you... post your note in the Nav forum and also in the nav forum on bimmerboard.

When he sees the size of the job, $8000 won't seem bad.

LOL well you guys aren't convincing me to DIY either. So $800 isn't that bad huh? Yeah these guys are good. I'd trust them to rebuild any BMW from the ground up. He'll be putting in my invision headrests when i'm ready too.

Hey Meister - i knew you'd reply with DIY lol. Oh yeah - send me the retrofit guide. let me take a look at the size of the job.

How much will this whole project cost you?

And, here is a serious question: what does it get you? why is having an in-dash OEM navigation system that important to you?? I am asking since I don't really know what comes with the OEM nagivation system in X5.

My wife's 328i has navigation... I usually don't even look at the damn thing... I mean, I know where I am going during almost 99% of my daily driving.

I have a portable navigation also, that I have put inside the X5, and I don't even take it out of the glove compartment.

Is it the navigation? watching DVDs? backup camera perhaps?? (don't know the functionalities of X5's navigation system)... what is it that you will get for the amount of money you will have to spend to add a navigation system in?

great question- mainly the amount of additional mods i can do with the Nav installed. LOL. My wife got her car now and she took her Garmin navigation back. So instead of going garmin route i decided to get the navigation. Doesn't get you much, but i was dissapointed when my 4.8 didn't have Nav.. but for teh price i got it for, i couldnt justify not buying it because it didn't have Nav.. especially since my 4.4 2001 didn't have Nav.

So it was just on my To Do list since i figured i wasn't spending an extra $8000 for a 4.8 with 20k more miles and a navigation when i can put in the nav for less than $2k. So far I've spent about $800 on everything. So now it's just the install.. well have to wait for monitor and wire harness to arrive.
