mtX5 is on a distinguished road
S mode is sport mode. generally, D is what it should be in. i believe around town you should remain in D for a smoother ride. In S mode it is quick to downshift, and is better left when your ready to make her roar.

just my experience. i'm sure more technical opinions will follow..
