Rear Facing Infant Car Seats in an X5 ('04)
I read in the '04 X5 owners manual the following, "No universal rearward-facing child-restraint systems may be mounted on the rear seats. if you want to use a rearward-facing child-restraint system in the rear, then the BMW Baby Seat with or without the LATCH child-restraint fixing for child seat is suitable for this purpose."
Am I reading this right? So is BMW trying to say that only their BMW Baby Seat can be installed? I got a little one on the way and was gonna install it, then ran into this in the manual. Any thoughts? BTW, I have a Chicco Keyfit 30 infant car seat that I would like to use.

I'm very interested to hear a response to this too as I'm in almost the EXACT same situation. Baby on the way in 2.5 months, 2005 X5, Chicco Keyfit.
I've seen the carseat installed in a Mercedes C-class and a Lexus LS no problem. I wonder what it is about the X5 that is different. Maybe the seat belt tensioners? I just checked the '09 X5 manual (online) and didn't see anything regarding rear-facing carseats...  Quote:

This is absolutely and totally bizarre. You are correct, that is what the manual says. I have absolutely zero idea why this is the case.
Let me attach the relevant pages so that others can see this issue. My honest advice, is to contact BMW NA via e-mail AND telephone to discuss this issue with them since it's pretty darn important and totally strange. Tell them to download a copy of the 2004 manual and 2005 manual from their own website (www.bmwusa.com) to compare and contrast the two, in case they don't believe you or don't know what the hell you're talking about. If you would do that and report back that would be great. Look at the attachments. They are the same relevant pages from the owner manuals from year 2000 to 2006. As follows: Year 2000 - Published 12/99 Year 2001 - Published 09/00 Year 2002 - Published 10/01 Year 2003 - Published 08/02 Year 2004 - Published 08/03 Year 2004 - Published 04/04 Year 2005 - Published 10/04 Year 2005 - Published 03/05 Year 2006 - Published 07/05 Only the 2 manuals during model year 2004 have this strange statement. Called BMWNA and pretty much got nothing out of them. Well they did say that the manual is pretty vague about the rear carseat thing, but what it really boiled down to was a "reliabilty" issue. The guy I spoke with admitted that. He did refer me to go here: Home | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA) | U.S. Department of Transportation to look up what is said to be safe restraint systems, but wasn't useful as I want to find a particular vehicle's safety...not a carseat. Oh well, best thing to do is take advantage of our CHP here in California and have them check if the seat is installed correctly. Thanks to all for your input....

i actually just took my newborn son home today. i brought him home using a rear facing peg perego primo viaggio car seat that i had no problems using in my 06 x5 with the child latch. hope this helps...

That statement sounds like a CYA liability issue for BMW. If anything goes wrong BMW can claim they aren't responsible because the vehicle comes with a warning stating universal child seats can't be used.
I could understand if it were a seatbelt issue, but with the latch system I don't understand why there would be any concern at all.

I don't think so since it seems to be an exclusive statement to year 2004. Look at my update above (post # 3).
