Same thing happened here on a 2004 X5 4.4i. In colder weather the shudder after ignition would be pretty strong and I would have to shut it off and restart. Just talked to my service advisor and he indicated the same root cause - the valvetronic levers aren't functioning right and are all being replaced.
At the same time two other very common issues are being fixed: a faulty sensor that causes the rear stabilizer message and a broken sunroof cassette the kept the glass from closing.

I have the issue and am working with the dealer to see if BMW will goodwill it. I'm actually open to paying for some of the labor if they cover the parts.
