Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
I get the same compliments when I say mine is going on 11 years old. People ask me "wow you must make a good living to afford a BEAMER" lol. I tell them mine is worth less than your new Acura lease haha.

Honestly though if I got a set of Depos with LED angel eyes, running boards, and the front spoiler skid plate it would look even more current than it already does. The chassis has aged almost as well as the E39 IMO....

My 2003 X5 4.6 in Imola Red turns heads everywhere and I haven't even bothered to wax it since I bought it nearly 2 years ago. It is the car that started the whole sport SUV craze and it still looks sharp. Color is critical IMO, as are the larger wheels. The right combination makes all the difference. The only time I was truly annoyed is when some guy parked his brand new bright red Dodge 4x4 next to my E35. His red looked a lot hotter than my red, I had to admit.

Not outdated in my opinion. The lines of the E53 are timeless and it is similar to the E39 in having a "classic" BMW look. I only moved on from these cars as I feel the E53 demands unusual amounts of time and $$ to keep on the road.

The E53 design ages like Rob Lowe, other SUV designs age like Mickey Rourke.

I went to the dealer to get the new key and the service girl said she'd take it around back for the tech to do his magic. I went around back because I like to see what people do when they touch my car . She said "I can't believe how beautiful this looks. I thought it was a new X5 until I got in, saw the dash and said - wait, this is old! What year is it?". 2004, I replied with a smile. Now, I JUST finished washing, vacuuming and freshening it a bit, so it was looking sweet, but it throws people all the time. If someone is handy, willing to get their hands dirty, you can buy one for less than $10K now, toss some seriously neglected maintenance into it, and have a really, nice luxury SUV.

When I was shopping, I had a tough time with the 6-cyl (I already have a 6-cyl 328) and stock looking 4.4's (the back end didn't do it for me and most had collapsed camber which made it worse). The 4.8's had a nice rear end and wider stance with the rims/tires. Lucky for me I found a 4.4 dressed in 4.8 trim that came with summer and winter rims (both sets of rubber are dead or near dead, but meh, I wanted the rims). Best of both worlds.

The car holds itself well when I park it at the dealer, looks hot, has an intoxicating exhaust note and carves the road up like a hot knife through butter (minus the wee understeer...).

If my wife decides to move on from it (it really is her daily driver, not mine..), then I get a dedicated tow vehicle for my track car and life will be complete

Cheers!

It's a good thing you guys aren't car designers for any of the major auto manufacturers, we'd all be driving Model T Fords...lol! First of all, you have to take the emotional attachment out of the question, second, no one in their right/unbiased mind would call an E53 timeless. Timeless is not a word to be thrown around, timeless refers to cars like Porsche, Corvette, Jaguar, Ferrari or Mustang, just to name a few. I don't consider the E53 a timeless design, that's a bit of a stretch, I don't think you'll find an E53 in any car museums, unless it's owned by BMW. The E53 is just like any other massed produced SUV, now is it more fun to drive than others, absolutely, but timeless it ain't. That's why most of them will end up in the salvage yard when they have no apparent physical damage, the parts are worth more than the car. So your $50-$70K E53 (when new) is now worth only about $7-$8k, how do I know this you ask, I have a little over 10 years in the auto business, I do it now part-time. When we get an E53 in on trade we don't even think about keeping it for our used car lot, too many miles and they usually need too much work done, off they go to the wholesalers. And as for the technology inside, todays new cars and trucks simply smoke the E53, the E53 is like a Commodore C64 computer, no comparison.
