Thanks very usefull information. That's what I thought too when the temperature keeps dropping here in Midwest. I realized there must be something wrong with the hatch. The other day, I opened the hatch and check out the rubber and noticed the rubber seem to shrunk.

Thanks Aaron,
It's sad a car this expensive would do this. I hope I find it soon. If all else fails, I'm just going to have to turn up the music. |

Ok sorry to rehash this debate. Especially since this thread is over a year old. But if y'all can remember back, were your noises more of a creaking sound? I have just a very intermittent knocking when I make a turn, or accelerate, or just hit small bumps. It doesn’t happen all the time, but very often, and is driving me insane! It is almost as if something is rocking back and forth in the trunk.
I have wrapped the jack in a towel, and I have wrapped the plastic holder around the spare in a towel. Everything else seems secure. Could it be a rear sway bar (if those exist)? I am going to try the felt and rear lid stopper tricks and see if that does anything. I have searched these threads for some time now looking for an answer as the noise is getting really really bothersome! If anyone has any other ideas, I am all ears. Thanks!! |

I doubt we can narrow all these down, I wish bmw had a better sound engineer to handle all these issue before releasing the car. My remedy is blast the radio up...

OMG I found the cause! After reading this thread, I looked for the plastic stopper piece next to the lift gate latch. Well there is no stopper. In a quick-fix I just did the ghetto thing and folded up some newspaper, sandwiched it between the lift/tail gates....voila...noise gone! So now I just have to find something more permanent I guess.

Rattles, clunk and creaks can get pretty annoying - but with a little persistence, you can usually track 'em down... |

BMW DO know what the rattle is. My cousin had this problem with his X5 and when he rang his dealer to have it booked in they said they knew exactially what the problem was. He left the X5 in and the rattle is gone. So I'm going to call them this week to find out what it was they fixed. On another note I have noticed that there is a rubber BUMP STOP listed on the parts system, that fits beside the boot latch on the top half of the rear hatch. The part numbers 51240392520 and you only require one. My X5 does not have one there so I'm going to get one as its priced at 56cent only!!
