I just looked up the BMW labor rate for replacing one front caliper and brake system bleeding with DSC, the total labor for that is about 3.4 hours. Was there any diagnosis time towards determining the caliper to be bad? If they had to do lots of test driving and system checks to diagnose a problem caused by a caliper I could see then adding a 1.5 hour diagnosis fee.

Weasal - I was hoping you would respond back - The dealer I go to charges $115 an hour for labor. I had the brakes flushed there several months ago for $115 - so I assume 1 hour labor - so you are saying the book is roughly 2.4 hours for just the caliper replacement. It still seems high to me, but as a Master Tech and Loyal X5 owner I have no choice but to believe you. Thanks again for chiming in.

Actually the caliper labor was only about 1.8, but the bleeding labor is higher than the brake fluid flush labor due to the DSC unit having to be bleed electronically as well.

5H is far too long to replace one caliper even after having to bleed the brakes. What is wrong with the caliper? Is it sticky? FYI I had a front sticky caliper last year on my X that would not retract properly after braking. I was able to fix it while changing my pads and rotors by doing the following. After removing the old pads I pressed the brakes to get the brake piston out to its almost max and cleaned the calipers and pistons with brake cleaner. I then sanded the side of the piston with 800 sand paper. Cleaned the all caliper again with brake cleaner and I lubricated the sides of the pistons with some drops of ATF oil and pushed it back using the old pad and a clamp. Between replacing the front rotors and pads and working on the caliper it took me about 2h. 10k miles later I still have no more problem with the sticky caliper.

Weasel / Killcrap
Let me hear your thoughts...as I'm still a believer on the 2 man brake bleed vs. the motive brake bleeder to get the firmest pedal... Just short of the GT1/diag computer to bleed the ABS unit, is there any other benefit to having the dealer bleed the brakes vs.... DIY/INDY. I guess the same question applies to alignments and the KDS SYSTEM..... TIA |

Keep in mind that BMW dealers always charge (with few exceptions) the stated "book time" for the repair job not the actual time. That's why your BMW indy will cost you less even though the hourly labor rates might be the same. His actual time was much less than 5 most likely but you will be charged the full 5 :-(

What upsets me most is I could have done this myself hadn't it been for the timing - had meetings booked all week and needed the car fixed.
