Radio, Airbag, Seatbelt, Horn, are they all together?

Ok this is odd, I have been having problems with the radio, seatbelt and airbag, lately I have started the X up and the radio would not come one, so I turn it off, start up and its fine, then there have been times where the airbag and seatbelt light are on, seatbelt is hooked and the radio won't come on, and airbag light won't go off, then again turn it off, start up and it is fine. Then the seatbelt light is off (hooked), airbag light is on, radio is not working and horn won't work.

So my question is, are the airbags, seatbelts, horn and radio all connected somehow?

In case anyone has this issued, it was finally determined that the ignition switch was bad, it was only putting out 5 volts, 12 volts is waht is normal, so the voltage caused the issue, plus right before i had it go in the yellow brake light, yellow abs and yellow triangle came on, all due to the ignition switch, They also replaced the brake light switch.

It took about 10 hours of diagnostic time at Bimmerworks, but they were great any only charged me half, so in all $611 fixed the issue.

WOW! 10 hours seems like alot, nice that they only charged you half. Nothing against the technican but hell I did my diagnostic right here by just reading this on the forum and taking others experiences and decided to just go ahead and change my ignition switch to see if it would solve the problem and it did.

It was like $75 from the dealer, which ended up they gave it to me free because the guy gave me the one for the 3.0i instead which caused me to make another trip back to the dealer.

I don't have the part #, but it was $80 from the stealership, I don't even know if you can buy the ignition switch aftermarket and if I could I would not have anyways, that is not the kind of part I want to be aftermarket, just go to BMW and get it if it is what you need.

Hi RDM3,

Do you have an image of what the ignition switch looked like? I was advised by the stealer to change this thing that holds the windshield wiper switch and turn signal switch underneath the steering wheel, but i bought this part from other vendor as it was not available in stock. I decided to change it myself and was successful to replace this part. But the problem is after few minutes, the issue is there again, no horn, no radio, airbag sign is lit and the seatbelt sign gone, (resetting the battery would solve issue but will only last for few minutes as well or after turning ignition off) plus when i try to open the sun visor which has a small mirror and light above it i've noticed that it causes the "Transfailsafe Prog" message to appear on the cluster, while bulb is not lit which infact it should. I don't want to go to the stealer as i feel that the part which i have replaced is really not the issue. any suggestion?

Thanks,

Hi, sorry I don't have an image, the shop just ordered the part and installed it, I never saw it.

Wow, I do know they changed the brake light switch also, which is not an overlay expensive part, and I do not think the brake light switch has anything to do with the wipers, horn, airbag or radio.

When you get the transfailsafe error, from what I was told, you should see a decrease in performance, so watch that, but have you replaced the igniation switch, I am assuming no, but if you do it yourself the voltage should be 12, mine was getting 5, which caused all the problems. The part isself is $80 around here from the stealer, so maybe just have them replace it, whether they want ot or not, and see if it works, but have them check the voltage before you get it swapped.

When the local shop had mine, they ran 12 volts right to the radio and it worked fine, so mine was the ignition switch for sure.

Hi, finally the issue on my X is solved. changed the ignition switch you've mentioned with the help from other boards. I've seen that ignition switch when i opened the steering wheel eh!
Thank you so much for this post, it helped me narrow my search and an instant solution. (although bought a different part at extra co$t as advised by the stealer, but am satisfied as i was also learning at the same time)

cheers
