Rear Tire wear on 03 X5 4.6
My right rear has worn down to the threads on the inner part of the tire. Both rears do show a camber look and always have. I assume this is normal and would cause this type of tread wear. Has anyone else with a 4.6L with 20 inch wheels seen the same issue and is this normal or is part of the rear independent suspension need some attending too?

No issues here...I check the tires once/month, balance and align with seasonal tire swap and maintain approx 32psi all around unless i'm traveling with cargo. I average 20k miles on the Diamaris (~10k/year). My tires seem to wear evenly...perhaps other 4.6L owners will chime in.

This is normal from what I have read here on the forum. I have a 02 4.6 that I recently acquired and just replaced the rear tires because of this.
20k on a set of tires. You need to drive harder. ![]()

get an alignment after you purchase your new tires and see the difference. your toe is probably out and the camber too.

The excessive wear is caused by the negative camber setting fo the X5 rear wheels. BMW set it up that way to cause inherent understeer to make the vehicle less prone to rolling over.
I have taken the negative camber out and have it at basically zero. I have had no ill effects on my handling and my tires wear evenly with no road noise. |

One more thing but everybody seems to have there own opinion, but I am looking to buy 2 new rear tires. I am either going to buy the original equipment Mich/Diamaris or Toyo proxes. Has anyone had the toyos and will they last 20k like my Mich/Diamris did? For half the price.

![]() Do you have 20s and a staggered setup? If not, what setup do you have currently? I have Advan STs (summer tires) 20x9.5 all the way around with 265/45s on the front & 295/40s on the rear. Backed out the neg camber as much as possible but still ended up with -1.80 or -2.00 overall. My rear tires are wearing evenly after about 9K. I THINK I can get another 9-10K out of them. |

I dont have a staggered set up. but they are the replica 20". They are the 9.5" all round. Think I will be getting Toyos again unless anyone has any other advise or experience to offer ????.

I have 22's on my X5 and my rears lasted no more than 20K as well. I switched back to my factory 17's without any adjustment and they weren't wearing out anywhere close to the rate the 22's were. I found that real odd considering if toe and camber were wearing out the 22's initially, why not the 17's?
