Horrible Noise at start up!

I have been looking through the posts but I can't seem to find a better way to explain this noise I have when I start my truck. Usually only when its cold, like in the morning. I got this truck like 2 months ago, and I have heard it twice until recently. It is now heard more frequently.

So when I start this up cold, I would say it sounds like a couple marbles are being dropped on the fan while spinning. I say only a couple because it only lasts for a second or two. It really sounds quite bad. My friend thinks it could be the rods? I am not sure, all I know is I want to fix it before it gets worse because it seems like it is. Anyone know what this is.

Likely the vanos units clattering until oil gets pumped back into them... Try searching "noisy vanos" on youtube to see if it sounds like the same noise. This noise is somewhat common on older/higher mileage engines, and isn't really anything to worry about rather than just annoying. There are 2 options for fixing this problem, one being buying new vanos units and replacing them (4 of them for a V8) or remove them and reseal them using stuff like this...

DrVanos.com

Not an easy job though.

Its the Drive Belt and the auto tentioner adjust when you first start it in the morning. I changed the belts of my 3er and X5 noise is gone.

If you suspect drive belts/tensioner pulleys rather than internal noise (none of us have heard this noise mind you) simply pull the belt off one night and see if the noise is still there or gone when you start her the next morning.

My observations is based on my experience, My 2 bimmers have the same noise every time i start them in the morning, specially when starting after not using them for few days. After changing the belt of one of them, I immediately notice the noise was gone, even after not using it for few days (cold weather too). I did same fix with the other one, noise disappeared.

Yeah I see that at work too, on a few different models. But I don't know what he is hearing...
